Out & About—Santa Cruz sea lions

Out & About The World

If I’m ever not able to get around on my own, just sit me in a chair on the Santa Cruz Wharf and let me watch and listen to sea lions all day. I think these creatures are just amazing and magical. Watch in full-screen mode and turn the volume up.

Out & About—San Diego Harbor boat tour with Captain Randy Phillips

Out & About

When you come to San Diego, be sure to put “Harbor Cruise” on your list of things to do. There are quite a few harbor cruise boats full of tourists.

San Diego harbor cruise

Sure, you can take one of those. They are fun. I’m here to suggest even more fun. Take a smaller cruise, like one with Captain Randy and Randy Phillips Tours.

Captain Randy Phillips

Much more personable and enjoyable. Since Captain Randy was just a few feet away during the 2-hour boat tour, it was easy to ask questions…. And darned if he didn’t know all the answers!

That’s Captain Randy’s boat just to his left, so there’s no place to hide from the glorious San Diego Sun. If you’re not a sun bunny like me, take a hat, a long-sleeve shirt, sun screen…. whatever you need to have an enjoyable 2-hour harbor cruise.

It doesn’t look like Earth

Out & About

One of the most beautiful areas of San Diego County is La Jolla at low tide.

There’s nothing quite like it with its natural beauty looking like something from Mars; its pelicans, cormorants, sea lions, and seals; and its opportunities for great sunsets.

Here’s a slide show to illustrate:

I love the little girl dancing for the sea lions in the last picture. I’ll call it the Sea Lion Dance.

I’ll end with another sunset picture from Monday’s trip to La Jolla:

La Jolla is a great place to visit at any time. The tide pools and beaches are more accessible during low tides, and the there seem to be more wildlife, probably due to the sea creatures stranded in the tide pools.

You can find tide schedules here: La Jolla tides.

The best place to see the tide pools is at Rocky Point, shown on the map below.

Parking throughout La Jolla, especially during Tourist Season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), is scarce so be prepared to drive around for a while looking for a parking spot or park the first place you see a spot and walk to Scripps Park. A walk through downtown La Jolla is a great experience all on its own!rocky point la jolla map

Sea lions at play in the wild

Out & About

As much as I love visiting zoos, aquariums, and animal sanctuaries, there’s still something special about seeing wildlife in the wild.

So yesterday Jim and I took a walk along Fisherman’s Landing between Harbor Island and Shelter Island. We were there rather later, when the day fisherpeople were coming in and the night fisherpeople were leaving.

At the side of one of the just-arrived boats were three sea lions playing in the drainage from the boat. Normally the docks are private, for owners and fisherpeople, but since there was an arriving crowd and a leaving crowd, I snuck onto the docks and got a 3-minute video of the sea lions at play.

Marine mammals of La Jolla, California

Out & About

I have accomplished so much today that I thought I would treat y’all to an extra blog post.

Since my blog post earlier was Photographic Art of the brown pelicans of La Jolla, I thought I’d stick with the wildlife of La Jolla theme and show you the harbor seals and sea lions.

Smile (or leave a comment) if you know the two quickest ways to tell a harbor seal from a sea lion.
