Music on Mondays–I never promised you a rose garden

The Music Chronicles of Russel Ray

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Many decades ago, around 1968, my wise old grandmother had me dig out a huge plot of grass and create a rose garden. I was forever down on roses. Still am. If it had been my idea….

As I was looking for a good subject for today’s Music on Mondays post, I realized that I never got around to doing a Friday Flower Fiesta post last week.

So why don’t we combine this week’s Music on Mondays and with last week’s forgotten Friday Flower Fiesta and let you listen to Lynn Anderson’s “Rose Garden” while looking at some pictures of the beautiful roses that were blooming this past month, all made into Photographic Art.

Happy End-of-March day!

California Least Tern

Which is the weed?

Did you know?

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

My wise old grandmotherMy wise old grandmother,
a Master Gardener
before there was such a designation,
always told me that a weed
is any plant
that is growing
where you don’t want it to grow.

Okay then.

Picture 1, weed or not?Weedy rose

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Picture 2, weeds or not?Not weeds

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

The first, a yellow rose, grows in my cactus garden. I cannot get rid of it. I have tried cutting it down, chopping it down, drowning it, withholding water, digging it out. It keeps coming back. It is a weed because it grows where I don’t want it to grow.

The second picture shows weeds that are not weeds because they grow where people want them to grow. Who are these people?

Oh, I’m so confused….

Weeds…. Not weeds…. Weeds…. Not weeds….

The weeds that are not weeds surround a runway at the San Diego International Airport.
Hmmm.
Great picture for those looking out the window while their plane is landing

“Wow, honey, look at all the weeds.
Why doesn’t someone mow them down or something?”

Well, the weeds that are not weeds are a nesting site for a rare colony of California Least Terns.

California Least Tern

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

In 1973, there were only about 300 nesting pairs of California Least Terns in all of California. Today, thanks to projects like this one run by the San Diego Zoo and the County Regional Airport Authority, there are over 6,000 nesting pairs in California, still not enough to ensure their survival because there are only thirty colony nesting sites in the State.

Birds lay their eggs directly on the sand/gravel surface. The warmth of the sun and sand apparently helps the birds develop within the egg. Areas like this near the airport are critical because the birds don’t have to compete with beach-goers, the planes chase away most predatory raptors, and the airport fence keeps out dogs, foxes, and other four-legged hunters.

Look at the second picture and you can see a little fence in the bottom foreground. That fence is a whopping ten inches high and defines the actual nesting site within the airport fence. During nesting season you can see eggs laying on the surface, and parents closely guarding them.

Their wintering location remains unknown, which I thought was interesting, but biologists suspect that they winter along the Pacific Coast in South America.

I intend on going back to this site during breeding season (April to mid-June) to see if I can get some pictures of parents and eggs, maybe even some little chicks.

For more about the California Least Tern, see the Wikipedia page.

With this next flower from an orchid tree, it was grossly out of focus. I liked the colors and the composition, though, so I made something artsy out of it using Photoshop CC.

For the following picture of an angel’s trumpet flower, I had my camera set on bracketing, so it took three pictures, one at normal exposure, one underexposed by two f stops, and one overexposed by two f stops. I tried to put them through HDR but since I did not use a tripod, the pictures were out of alignment and gave me a really weird result, which I did not like. Next I tried using Photoshop’s Photomerge function to see what would happen, and the picture here is the result of merging the three pictures.

Friday Flower Fiesta (10-11-13) — What you make others see

Friday Flower Fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

My wise old grandmother died in 2003.

The last time I saw her, we sat down and looked through her many scrapbooks and photo albums.

I remember her putting them together all those years ago to portray her life as she saw it, a joy that words can’t describe.

Unfortunately I did not inherit any scrapbooks or photo albums when she died—just a couple thousand dollars.

However, I will never forget growing up in her house and seeing her sitting at the dining room table with scrapbooks and photo albums, scissors, glue, photo corners, and extra pages, putting things together, composing every bit as much as a writer or a musician.

And I’ll never forget the few words she had for anyone walking by who would criticize her for cutting apart the pictures: “What comes out of the camera is just the basics to start with.”

Today I feature pictures of flowers that were just the basics to start. In every case they could be considered throwaway pictures because each of them had serious problems that made them unworthy of simply being a great picture of a flower. In some cases, they were simply cropped severely to get rid of something annoying in the background. In other cases, I resorted to Photoshop’s Filter Gallery and a Photoshop plugin called Topaz Adjust while keeping in mind something Edgar Degas said over a hundred years ago about his paintings: “Art is not what you see but what you make others see.” Now simply replace the word art with the word photography.

In the 24 hours following my Friday Flower Fiesta posts on July 19, July 26, and August 2, I lost 8, 12, and 7 followers, respectively. What’s with that? Who doesn’t like flowers? Well good riddance to them. Anyone else who doesn’t like flowers can take a hike, too!………… 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Friday Flower Fiesta (5/24/13) — From the campus of San Diego State University

Friday Flower Fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Schools are getting out for the summer, and this weekend is Memorial Day weekend, the official start of Tourist Season in San Diego.

Today’s Friday Flower Fiesta comes from the campus of San Diego State University (SDSU). A couple of years ago the campus seemed to have undergone a transformation that made the campus into a botanical garden. Right now it seems pretty barren since 32,000 students have taken off for a couple of weeks before summer school starts, but that makes it easy to walk around taking pictures without having to clone people out of the pictures!

Friday Flower Fiesta — Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden

Friday Flower Fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Located at 2525 Park Boulevard, the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden in Balboa Park is an All America Rose Selection Display Garden with over 2,500 roses representing 200 varieties on three acres.

Park your car in the southeast corner or the far east row of the San Diego Zoo parking lot. Those areas are well away from the Zoo entrance and are often available. Walk across the street and south towards the rose garden. The first thing you’ll see is a beautiful tree dressed all in pink.

Friday Flower Fiesta (3/8/13) — Flowers on stamps

Friday Flower Fiesta

History Through Philately stamp

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I thought I would take a break from orchids today (we’ll get back to them next week) and combine my love of philately with my love of nature.

Here, then, are some flowers from my photograph collection and a United States postage stamps featuring that flower.

Scott #1183 Kansas Statehood

Sunflower and ladybug

Sunflower and clouds

Kansas entered the Union on January 29, 1861, and its 100th anniversary of statehood was celebrated with the release of Scott #1183 on May 10, 1961 — why the Post Office didn’t release it on January 29, 1961, is beyond me. Its official nickname is the Sunflower State, and the highest point in the state is Mount Sunflower at 4,041 feet above sea level.

Scott #1256 Poinsettia

Scott #2166 Poinsettia

Poinsettia

The poinsettia is native to Mexico and was introduced to the United States in 1825. The poinsettia industry was started by Albert Ecke in Los Angeles in 1900. His son, Paul Ecke, developed a specific grafting technique that allowed the poinsettia industry to expand, but it was Paul Ecke Jr. who was responsible for advancing the association between Christmas and poinsettias. Paul Jr. changed the market from mature plants shipped by rail to cuttings shipped by air, sent free plants to television stations for them to display on air from Thanksgiving to Christmas, and appeared on The Tonight Show and Bob Hope’s Christmas specials to promote poinsettias.

The Ecke family poinsettia operation moved to Encinitas (that’s right here in San Diego County!) in 1923.

Left to grow on their own, poinsettias will grow tall and scragly. The Eckes developed a grafting method, known only to them, that allowed them to create a compact, bushier plant. In the 1990s, a university researcher discovered, and published, the grafting method, allowing competitors to flourish, particularly those using low-cost labor in foreign countries.

In 2008, Paul Ecke III decided to stop producing plants in the U.S. The Ecke Family operations still control about 70% of the United States market and 50% of the worldwide market.

Roses are used to make perfumes, jams, jellies, marmalade, tea, rose syrup, and skin products. Some rose petals are candied, and rose creams are a traditional English confectionery.

Scott #1877 Camelia

White Camellia

Several Camellias are used to make tea, Camellia sinensis, known as the “tea plant,” being the most popular because its tea is considered the finest made from Camellias. Camellias also produce cooking oil for hundreds of millions of people in China and Southeast Asia. Camellia oil is also used to clean and protect the blades of cutting instruments.

Scott E1878 Dahlia

Scott #4167 Dahlia

Dahlia

There are a great variety of dahlias, resulting from their eight sets of chromosomes; most plants have only two sets of chromosomes. The best place to see dahlias in San Diego County is at the annual San Diego County Fair in June and July. For as long as I have been going to the Fair (18 years), there has always been a dahlia show with hundreds of beautiful flowers on display.

Scott #1879 Lily

Lily

Some lilies, especially Lilium longiflorum (the common Easter Lily), are toxic to cats. The mechanism of toxicity is not understood but it involves damage to the renal tubular epithelium, causing acute kidney failure.
