I think about half the Zoo is currently under construction with all sorts of renovations going on. The renovation I’m most looking forward to is the koala exhibit. The San Diego Zoo has the largest collection of koalas outside of Australia, but they’ve been missing since January. They are building a huge Australia Outback exhibit which will be much better for the koalas.
Yesterday I discovered that a few of the koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) have been moved over near Polar Bear Plunge. I have missed them because I only walk by their temporary exhibit area once every six months or so just to see if anything has changed in the three out-of-the way exhibit areas. Found out that it had!
One exhibit area remains empty, but the other two have been combined into one area for the koalas, and that’s where I found mommy and her 13-month old little one.
I took their picture even though the little one was sticking his tongue out at me. Last time I’ll do that! I know when I’m not appreciated….
By the way, a koala is not a bear, so don’t call them koala bears. They are marsupials, carrying their young in a pouch just like other marsupials like kangaroos and wallabys. Also, a little one is called ajoey. Not sure where that came from, but I think they should change it. Can you see someone at the Zoo yelling, “Look, a joey!” Doesn’t work for me. 🙂
