Picture of the Moment—Point of Impact

Picture of the Moment

Pelicans are one of my favorite birds to watch in the wild.

I grew up in Kingsville, Texas, (Gulf Coast) and spent a lot of time surfing on South Padre Island National Seashore during high school. I have lived here in San Diego since April 1993. I have been able to spend a lot of time watching pelicans and taking their pictures.

I have a few billion pictures of them flying through the air with the greatest of ease. Until this past weekend in Santa Cruz, California, I had never seen a pelican fishing. Usually they just sit around on shore, or a pier, or a fishing site, waiting for scraps from fisherpeople. One can often see crowds of them following a fishing boat returning from the Pacific Ocean.

In Santa Cruz, they weren’t waiting around for anything. They were doing their own fishing, and I caught one of them at the end of his dive, at the point of impact with the water. Click on the picture below and you can see very clearly the fish that Mr. Pelican had his eye on.

Out & About—The San Diego Jetty

Out & About San Diego

Once a month I go out to the San Diego Jetty to see how the feral cat colony there is doing. We old timers call them the Jetty Cats.

The Jetty is a great place to see beautiful sunsets because there always is something to put in the picture to add interest to the sunset. It’s also a great place to go for a walk, as so many people do.

Following are some pictures from my trip to the Jetty in August, featuring everything except the Jetty Cats, although a few can be seen in these pictures. The Jetty Cats will be featured in Saturday’s post since tomorrow is Friday Flower Fiesta day.

The San Diego Jetty is an active fishing area.
Sadly, that means the some fisherpeople leave
fishing line behind which the birds often get
entangled in, quite often losing a leg. This juvenile
already has to go through the rest of its life with just one leg.One-legged bird at the San Diego Jetty

It’s probably too late for this bird’s leg.
You can see the scar where the fishing line
was wrapped around the bird’s leg.

There are quite a few cormorants and pelicans.
The cormorants are relative new visitors to the Jetty.

The Jetty might be the only place where the birds are bigger than the cats,
and the cats have no interest in trying to catch those birds.Cats and a seagull at the San Diego Jetty

I love it when wildlife cooperates with me.

Yes, there is a family of skunks that lives right alongside the Jetty Cats.
Neither the cats nor the skunks seem to care but it does make it
interesting when people like me show up to leave a little water and food.Skunk at the San Diego Jetty

I love the little girl dancing for the sea lions in the last picture. I’ll call it the Sea Lion Dance.

I’ll end with another sunset picture from Monday’s trip to La Jolla:

La Jolla is a great place to visit at any time. The tide pools and beaches are more accessible during low tides, and the there seem to be more wildlife, probably due to the sea creatures stranded in the tide pools.

You can find tide schedules here: La Jolla tides.

The best place to see the tide pools is at Rocky Point, shown on the map below.

Parking throughout La Jolla, especially during Tourist Season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), is scarce so be prepared to drive around for a while looking for a parking spot or park the first place you see a spot and walk to Scripps Park. A walk through downtown La Jolla is a great experience all on its own!rocky point la jolla map

Oceanside, California

Today is National Trails Day!

Did you know?

Today is National Trails Day, sponsored by the American Hiking Society.

If you would like to find an event in your neighborhood, visit the American Hiking Society’s web site.

I took up hiking in 2009 when el doctoro told me to get out from behind the computer.

Literally.

Following are some pictures and flash videos from my most recent hike, this one at sunset along Oceanside beach.

Trust us!

Trust us!

Picture of the Moment

Many years ago I consulted with a company that was big on teamwork and team building. Each year there was a weekend conference where all sorts of team building took place. Sometimes we could opt out of individual exercises, like fire walking, which I opted out of because we had to sign an injury waiver. Ha!

One of my favorite activities was standing on a platform and falling backwards, trusting that ten of your co-workers standing below you were going to catch you.

(Yeah, right. I’m going to trust those jerks to catch me?)

This great blue heron reminds me of that activity:

Trust us!

Just fall backwards! Trust us! We’ll catch you!

Coming in for a landing

Clear the runway!

Picture of the Moment

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I love pelicans. They look so gangly and awkward. Just like me!

When I came to San Diego in April 1993, pelicans were nowhere to be found. About five years ago I noticed that pelicans were appearing in San Diego. Lots of them! Huge numbers of them. I thought, “It’s about time pelicans discovered how nice San Diego is but I wonder what took them so long.”

Several months ago an article in the newspaper confirmed that San Diego was being overrun with pelicans and no one really understood why. Doesn’t matter to me…. as long as they are here and let me take photographs of them.

Here is my #1 favorite, so far:

The sad thing about my #1 penguin picture is that I took it with a Point & Shoot camera several years ago. The camera was set on its “home inspection setting,” so all I have is picture that is 800 x 712 pixels, quality enough for the Internet and nothing else. 😦

Bird art

So why do I keep taking pictures………………?

Out & About San Diego

I never really much cared for wildlife art, especially when I can see the real thing at the beach, the various wildlife preserves, SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, and Safari Park.

So why do I keep taking pictures of bird art?
