Friday Flower Fiesta (6-27-14)—Orchids

Friday Flower Fiesta

All pictures, minus the framing, will be available for purchase in my Flower Gallery at Fine Art America (once Julian gets back from Texas; who knows when that will be?). You can buy matted & framed prints, metallic prints, acrylic prints, greeting cards, cell phone cases, posters, and more!

More orchids from this past week. The San Diego County Orchid Society’s Summer Show in the Park is coming up July 19-20 and will be in Balboa Park. I’ll be there.

Friday Flower Fiesta (2-21-14)—Photographic Art featuring orchids

Friday Flower fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

My wise old grandmotherMy wise old grandmother used to say, “Never throw pictures away.” That was back in 1966, but her words are even more relevant in today’s digital photographic world with Photoshop, Topaz, Photomatix, Photo-Paint, PaintShop Pro, Gimp, Picasa, ACDSee, Aperture, and more.

One of my favorite flowers is the orchid because there are so many of them and they come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. According to Wikipedia, the orchid family is one of the two largest plant families with somewhere between 21,950 and 26,049 accepted species. That’s quite a wide range! That doesn’t even include the over 100,000 hybrids and cultivars that horticulturists and plant geneticists have created for our enjoyment. Why leave it to Mother & Father Nature to create something in millions of years when we can do it in decades, right?

I took thirteen orchid pictures which Eric Cooper, a former employee, initially classified as throwaways. Problems included poor focus, over exposure, under exposure, and big splotches and dead spots on the flowers. Remembering my wise old grandmother’s words, I had Eric throw them (pun intended) into a folder labeled throwaway orchids.

Today I retrieved them and used Photoshop and Topaz to create Photographic Art postage stamps. Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed creating them. Let me know which is your favorite—13¢ is mine.

Friday Flower Fiesta (11-15-13)

Friday Flower Fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

For Spring Break 1966, my wise old grandmother helped me set up my very first company. It was a typing company and would begin operations as soon as the spring semester concluded. In other words, instead of mowing lawns and washing cars for the summer like my friends would be doing, I would be typing papers, mostly for students at Texas A&I University, which was just two blocks away from where I lived with my wise old grandmother.

I named my company “Just Your Type” to play on the raging hormones of college-age adults. The company was such a success that I expanded its mission to include research and writing. Thus, a college student could pay me to research, write, and type his (or her) term paper, and many did. My services were in such demand that it became more than just a summer job. It operated in Kingsville, Texas, through the end of high school in 1973; College Station, Texas, from 1973-1977 while I was at Texas A&M University; 1977-1983 in Houston; and 1983-1993 back in College Station.

By the time I was back in College Station in 1983, personal computers had stormed the world. Typing was now “word processing” and “desktop publishing.” Desktop publishing meant the use of pictures, graphics, and charts. My first business computer was an Everex running at 8 HZ. I installed every software I could find that would make word processing and desktop publishing easy and fun: WordStar, WordPerfect, Word, Lotus 1-2-3, Aldus PageMaker, Photoshop, Corel Draw, Corel Photo-Paint, and several others whose names are forever lost in the past because they didn’t survive.

I still use Photoshop, Photo-Paint, Draw, and Word. Lotus 1-2-3 has been replaced by Excel, and PageMaker fell by the wayside when Adobe bought Aldus and then declined to maintain, upgrade, and support PageMaker in favor of their own product, InDesign. One of the great facets of capitalistic competition is that if you can’t create a better product, buy the better product and then destroy it.

My goal right now is to use only three products for what I need to do each day: Word, Excel, Photoshop. I know that Photoshop can do everything that I currently do in Draw, Photo-Paint, and PaintShop Pro. One area that PaintShop Pro really has Photoshop beat is in its presets for picture frames. One of my favorites is this one:

Hibiscus

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Now that I’m really getting a grip on myself, er, I mean a grip on layers and masks in Photoshop, I found it pretty easy to create that frame. I explored a little more since I didn’t want to create exactly what PaintShop Pro had, and came up with this:

Hibiscus

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Once I decided that I really liked that, especially the black & white outer section of the photograph, I practiced on some more pictures and then created a Photoshop Action to do everything for me automatically. Using the Action, framing the following eleven pictures took all of 33 seconds. It took me another couple of minutes to name them….

Once you learn how to do something and think that you might like to continue to do that same thing in the future, create an Action for it. See my post, “Action (or, Recording macros in Photoshop).”

Poinsettias from the 2013 San Diego County Fair

Friday Flower Fiesta (8-16-13) — Summer poinsettias and more

Friday Flower Fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

My wise old grandmother adopted me when she was 56 and I was 11. After she got control of me, she forced me to dry the dishes, set the table, sweep the garage, hang the laundry out to dry…. child abuse…….. child labor…….. illegal in today’s world……….

I even had to prune the poinsettias before the summer was over. According to my wise old grandmother, that was so they would be tall and full of flowers by Christmas. We have poinsettia bushes throughout Southern California, and they will bloom whenever they darn well feel like it.

It’s no surprise, then, that professional growers can get their poinsettias to bloom whenever they want, and the recent San Diego County Fair had a nice selection:

Poinsettias were not the highlight of the Fair, though. Those were the rose competition (see 8-19-13 Friday Flower Fiesta) and the dahlia competition (see 7-26-13 Friday Flower Fiesta). However, throughout the fairgrounds, flowers were part of the Fair. Here are a few pictures of flowers used as accents and decoration from other exhibits and shows:

Orchids at the San Diego Zoo

Friday Flower Fiesta (8-2-13) — Orchids from the San Diego Zoo

Friday Flower Fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Today’s Friday Flower Fiesta comes from the San Diego Zoo’s orchid greenhouses. These greenhouses used to be off limits to the public, but recently they were opened and made into a walk-through exhibit. The San Diego Zoo, in addition to being a world-class zoo, is also a world-class arboretum and botanical garden, so don’t neglect looking at the plants as you make your way from animal exhibit to animal exhibit.

These orchid greenhouses are off the beaten path, and most people miss them in their hurry to get to Elephant Odyssey. Just before Elephant Odyssey and right after the Meerkats, as you are coming from the main Zoo entrance, look left and you’ll see a road leading into what looks like Zoo maintenance facilities. In fact, on the official Zoo map, it shows a bulldozer:

That’s where the orchid greenhouses are. They have more unusual orchids than I’ve ever seen, and I make it to a lot of orchid shows, so don’t miss them!

Orchid at the San Diego Zoo

Friday Flower Fiesta — Orchids at the San Diego Zoo

Friday Flower Fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I go to a lot of orchid shows each year. Recently I found some of the most unusual orchids I’ve ever seen, and it wasn’t at a show. It was at the San Diego Zoo! The Zoo is an internationally recognized botanic garden as well as a zoo, but orchids are not something that we see too many of in our desert climate.

When my blogging friend Barb Beacham and her husband came to San Diego on April 25 and 26, I was able to provide them with free tickets to the Zoo. I think I wore them out.

We discovered the new orchid greenhouses which are now open to the public, and today’s Friday Flower Fiesta is from the greenhouses.
