Queen Anne Cottage (You’ll know it when you see it)

Out & About

When I was but a boy, I wanted to be a history teacher. Then I learned how to spell anesthesiologist and wanted to be an anesthesiologist. Then I found out that becoming an anesthesiologist would require college, medical school, and an internship. By the time I was 30, I might be an anesthesiologist. For a boy of 11, 30 was way too old. I was back to wanting to be a history teacher. Never made it, but I still love history.

So when I went to the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, I fell in love with the Queen Anne Cottage. Many people will know it when they see it because of its use in many television shows and the movies.

The Queen Anne Cottage and Coach Barn is a California Historical Landmark and is also on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance as an example of Queen Anne Style architecture.

It was built in 1885-1886 for Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin and his fourth wife, Lillie Bennett, daughter of Albert Bennett, the Cottage’s architect. When Baldwin died in 1909, his daughter Anita closed the Cottage and disposed of its furnishings. Many architectural elements, such as stained glass windows, black walnut doors, and marble fireplace mantels were stored in the coach barn.

The cottage and coach barn were restored from 1951 to 1953. Isn’t that a beautiful barn?

The Cottage has been used for many television shows and films. Arguably the most famous use was for the opening of “Fantasy Island” where Tattoo can be seen ringing the bell in the cottage’s tower and Mr. Roarke is seen exiting from the cottage. The cottage is also prominent in “Murder, She Wrote” and “Roots: The Next Generation.”

Outside of the Queen Anne Cottage, the Arboretum has played host to several “Tarzan” movies, two “Jurassic Park” movies, “Objective, Burma!”, and “The New Original Wonder Woman, ” and I’m only listing the movies I know!

Music videos have also been filmed here, including Katy Perry’s music video for “Roar.”

The arboretum is reported to be haunted, particularly the Queen Anne Cottage. Sightings have been reported of Lucky Baldwin’s ghost, one of his wives’ ghost,  and strange anomalies walking the gardens at night.

Following is a selection of pictures from the Arboretum & Botanical Garden. For more pictures, see my previous posts:

Ooops.

That last one isn’t a flower, either.

That’s Zoey the Cool Cat.

Look at the expression on her face.

She is pretty upset that we were gone for sixteen hours, leaving her all alone except for that strange lady who came by to give her food and water.

I tried to get her interested in that squirrel above but she’s having none of that until I explain my absence……..

Baby Canada Geese at the Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Arcadia, California

They’re everywhere! They’re everywhere!

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

As much as I love going to the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and SeaWorld, there’s still nothing like seeing wildlife in the wild. Except I’m pretty sure that I would not want to see a mountain lion mommy and her little one while I was out hiking by myself. Nonetheless……….

I remember when I stumbled upon my first Canada Goose here in San Diego in 1996. I thought the poor thing had a serious deficiency in its map-reading skills (GPS wasn’t on the scene yet). Thirteen years later and I know that the Canada Goose is resident in all the lower 48 States as well as Canada.

In the 38 years I lived in Texas, I never saw a Canada Goose in the wild, yet the whole state is covered with “I live here in the Winter” blue in my National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America. San Diego is covered in the same winter blue, but I can tell you that there are many Canada Geese that live here year round, such as the two in the following flash video. They have been here for several years, rain or shine, hot or cold, winter or summer:

I suspect the same is true up in the Los Angeles area. It definitely is not winter in L.A. yet when I was at the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia a few days ago for my 19th anniversary, the only bird more prevalent than the peacock was the Canada Goose.

Following are three flash videos of the Canada Geese at the L.A. Arboretum, including two little babies with mommy and daddy.

Remember that birds don’t have nationalities, so the plural of Canada Goose is Canada Geese, not Canadian Geese.
