SNIPPET 1

Julian gets things done faster than I can create things for him to do, so I’m working fast to create lots of Photographic Art to keep him busy uploading to the Photographic Art galleries of Russel Ray Photos at Fine Art America.

Yesterday evening he mentioned my picture of an ugly grey duck. Ducks, of course, are not ugly, nor are any birds. They just have different features, just like people. I couldn’t think of an ugly grey duck, so I went searching in my birds folder and found a picture of a Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex). Ah-ha! Lots of people think the Shoebill is ugly. What say you?

Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex)

The Shoebill is a huge bird, getting up to 60 inches tall, weighing up to 15.4 pounds, and having a wing span up to 8½ feet. I think it might be bigger than Julian:

Shoebill and Julian

I’m thinking that Shoebill could take care of Julian real quickly, so I would say, “Beware of name-calling.”

SNIPPET #2

As stated in a recent post (Rancho Santo Fe, the Benardo Fire, and my new BFF house), my chess class on Fridays happens to be out where the fires are burning, specifically the Bernardo Fire near Rancho Santa Fe. I had to pass through the burned area yesterday and, of course (you know me!), got a couple of pictures.

Burned hillsides with lots of smoke still rising from the fire on the other side:

Bernardo Fire, San Diego, California, 051614

Lonely mansion overlooking a burned hillside:

Bernardo Fire, San Diego, California, 051614

As you can see in the picture directly above, the fire got pretty close to that mansion. Fortunately, after the October 2003 and October 2007 fires, the County passed ordinances requiring people living in rural areas to create a defensible space around their home. That’s really the main reason why no homes were lost in the Bernardo Fire.

It’s so sad that the worse the fires are, the more beautiful the sunsets. This is from my back patio May 15 where it got up to 104° (F for my Canadian friends) that day:

I got my first paycheck from my sales at Fine Art America on May 15! Yahoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Zoey the Cool Cat will be able to eat at least one more can of Ocean Whitefish & Tuna! She’s a happy cat.

On this date in 2004, the first legal same-sex marriage in the United States was performed in the State of Massachusetts. Amazingly, the sky hasn’t fallen, the ground has not risen up to swallow people, and the sun still rises in the east and sets in the west……………

It’s no secret that the federal government has an interesting past. I had no idea that the lyrics of “Louie, Louie” by The Kingsmen had been investigated by the FBI as pornographic, which would have been a violation of the Interstate Transportation of Obscene Material law. If only they could investigate some of these rap and hip hop lyrics that I hear blasting from the bass-heavy car stereos…………… For more, see The FBI Laboratory weighs in on the “dirty” lyrics of “Louie Louie”. Or just listen to the song and enjoy it:

Zoey the Cool Cat loves to sit and watch (stalk) the mourning doves just inches outside the office window. Yesterday she found a new way to watch (stalk) them.

Zoey the Cool Cat stalking a mourning dove

She was really focused on the shadow for several minutes. The funny thing is, she knows where the mourning dove and feeder are because every 15 seconds or so she would turn around to look at the scene outside the window.

Remember that cool diner I found (see it here: Now I Know What Comfort Food is)? Jim, Julian, and I went to eat there last Saturday. The food was awesome! Definitely worth a return trip when I’m looking for awesome comfort food!

It was very busy, so I only got one picture of the interior, taken just before we left.

SNIPPET #9

Jim and I have an anniversary coming up. We celebrate several: The day we met (May 26, 1994), the day we moved in together (November 1, 1995), the day we got domestic partnered (July 31, 2004), and the day we got married (October 30, 2008). So our twentieth anniversary of meeting is in just nine days!

I lost all of my pictures of the building where we met in the Great Hard Drive Crash of August 2005. Here is the building where we got married:

San Diego County Administration Building

Just a few days later, California voters—the ones who voted—voted to disallow gay marriages. Fortunately, the California Supreme Court ruled in May 2009 that since we got legally married, our marriage would remain legal and valid. Ultimately the law disallowing gay marriage was overturned.

I don’t understand hateful Christians. Didn’t Jesus heal the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and house the homeless? Or did I read a poor translation of The Bible? WWJD?

WWJD?

Do you have BWS? YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Snippets

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Although I have had BWS, I have always been able to cure it within just a couple of hours.

I remember in 1983 when my best friend came over up from Houston to my new home in College Station, no more than a couple of days after I moved in. His off-the-wall comment was that my home looked like the Smithsonian Institution because I had a little of everything — modern, antique, Spanish, French, Victorian…. I was, and still am, so proud of his comment. I figure that if I like it, have room for it, and can afford it, I don’t see why I cannot enjoy it in my home.

Oh, sorry. I guess you are wondering what BWS is.

BWS is bare wall symdrome.

My walls have always been a shade of white because, as my wise old grandmother said, “White goes with everything.” I spice up the walls with pictures, paintings, wall hangings. Here is a picture of my most notorious wall hanging:

Walking stick

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

That’s a walking stick, fifteen inces from tip of the front leg to tip of the abdomen. For the life of me I cannot understand why no one except me likes my walking stick. Ah, well……………

This post, though, isn’t about my wall hangings. It’s about your BWS.

If you have a bare spot on a wall, and you have a favorite digital photo that you have not yet framed, why not have it printed on canvas by the CanvasPeople? They will give you an 8″x10″ canvas print FREE, or you can get $40 off any other print of your choosing.

Here is the secret place to take advantage of their offer:CanvasPeople

CanvasPeople solution for BWS

If you don’t have a favorite digital photo, all of mine are sale for just $5.00 each. If you have seen one you like in my blog posts, let me know.

You can also get one of my Drippers or Rounders digital files for just $5.00, too, or you can order them printed, framed, or on cards.

I have two different types of CREATIONS that I’m making for my Fine Art America galleries. One kind I’ve called DRIPPERS, and the other kind I’ve called ROUNDERS. At the end of each day, I’ll post my favorite CREATIONS for that day. If you’re looking for something unique to hand on your home or office wall, or you know someone who is, I hope you or they will consider CREATIONS by Russel Ray Photos.

SunflowersWay back in 1976, Paul McCartney (now Sir Paul McCartney) and Wings brought their Wings Over America tour to Houston, Texas. At the time I was a senior at Texas A&M University 90 miles away in College Station. I succeeded in convincing my aunt in Tomball, Texas, to drive 45 miles and camp out to get me a ticket as soon as they went on sale. Back then there were no online sales, Ticketmaster, etc. You had to go to the ticket office to get tickets. Massive inconvenience. She quickly became my favorite aunt.

The concert was going to be on a Saturday night, so I took the bus down to Houston on Thursday after my final class. I skipped my only Friday class, a 3-hour lab, to be the first in line to get in on Saturday. And I was. I was also the first into the Summit. With festival seating, I quickly looked around to see where the bass guitar was on stage, and made my way so that I was as close as possible to that bass guitar.

ArtichokeDuring the course of the concert, I took many pictures with my friend’s Minolta SLR camera. After printing all of the pictures, I sold one of them, an 8×10, for $100, to a Beatles collector in Houston. That was my first picture sale.

Now that every dog and his cat (oooops, Zoey the Cool Cat didn’t like that) cat and her dog has a camera or a smarty pants phone, selling pictures is a hit or miss endeavour (I put the U in there for my Canadian friends). Over the past five years I have sold 253 digital picture files for a grand total of $253.

One thing I have noticed is that the pictures that are selling are unique, either because of a different perspective, the name of the photographer (Ansel Adams still sells), or some other factor that makes them unlike any other.

In my own self-interest, I’ve been looking for something unique that would define me, my photography, or my photographic art (or artistic photography). I found it a couple of days ago, and now I am creating art galleries at Fine Art America. Here are my first two:

Interested in selling your photographs or other art work?

A few years ago I sold $225 worth of flamingo pictures to a woman in Christchurch, New Zealand. She had found my pictures on a blog that I did about flamingos. That was before I was even trying to sell anything. I was just having fun.

Then I realized that with seven billion people on Earth with the potential to be connected via the Internet, there might be more out there. That’s when I discovered photography web sites via ifp3.com. I have one of their web sites at Russel Ray Photos.

I have not used my ifp3.com web site like I could because it just takes too much time to do it right. I also have accounts at Zazzle and SmugMug. I’ve let Zazzle and SmugMug languish because they, too, take too much time to do right. If all I did was spend 18 hours a day at the computer, I might be able to make them work.

Today I joined Fine Art America. I initially liked it, but I’m finding that it takes a lot of time, too. Why does everything take a lot of time? My main problem with Fine Art America is that, according to them, their servers only update everything once every 24 hours. That means that you could upload a picture, forget to put it in a gallery, or want to add one more keyword, but you can’t for 24 hours because the picture is nowhere to be found.

Ya just gotta wait.

How so totally yesterday.

I uploaded these two pictures today:

At first glance Fine Art America seems intuitive but either it’s not or it has a steeper learning curve than Photoshop CS6. 🙂 I spent almost six hours today trying to make sense of it. Even then, I do think it’s the best of the three so I’m going to continue to work with it and see if I can maybe upload five pictures each day. I just hope the 24-hour lag doesn’t really turn me off because the site does look very promising.

As my wise old grandmother said, “Practice makes perfect.”
