Friday Flower Fiesta (3-31-17)—Bad plant! Bad, bad plant!

Friday Flower Fiesta

Ten pictures of flowers from last weekend at the San Diego Botanic Garden.

Tree Euphorbia
All parts of this plant are toxic.
Euphorbias include your common Christmas poinsettia, and the sap
from the poinsettia can cause skin irritation in many people, including me.Tree Euphorbia

Angel’s Trumpet
A beautiful, fragrant (especially at night) but very toxic plant. Extinct in the wild.
Sadly, too many high school students believe that making a liquid from this plant
and drinking it produces a “natural high.” Instead, ingestion can produce visual and auditory hallucinations, confusion, tachycardia, dry mouth, diarrhea, migraine headaches, rapid onset cycloplegia, mydriasis, paralysis, difficulty breathing and swallowing, and death. The fragrance can cause throat and lung irritation, headaches, nausea, and light-headedness. Eye contact can cause temporary blindness.
In other words, “Bad plant! Bad, bad plant!”

Friday Flower Fiesta (1-2-15)—Electric flowers

Friday Flower Fiesta

As my end-of-year present to myself, I bought Topaz Glow since there was a pretty good end-of-year discount.

I have found that it lends itself very well to busy flower pictures, i.e., those with lots of little doohickeys.

As opposed to last week when I included the original pictures with my Photographic Art productions, I’m not doing that this week. Simply enjoy the Photographic Art for what it is: not a photograph.

I would not want a huge collection of these hanging on a wall because I’d go psycho looking at them every day….

Zoey the Cool CatHuh?

Hold on….

A-ha! (not the group).

Zoey the Cool Cat tells me I’m already psycho.

There ya have it…. Expert opinion from the expert.

I do think any one of them would look good as a centerpiece, perhaps a 60″x40″ metal print….

My favorites are #10, #9, #4, and #2.

Friday Flower Fiesta (5/9/13) — The best for the best

Friday Flower Fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I would like to dedicate this Friday Flower Fiesta to two people:

First, to the memory of Wendy Stone, 41, of Riverside, who was killed in an automobile accident on Tuesday, April 23. Wendy was riding her motorcycle northbound on Interstate 15 at Indian Truck Trail (halfway between Corona and Lake Elsinore) when a truck going southbound veered into the center divider, hit the K-rail, jumped it, and flew into the northbound lanes. Debris from the K-rail hit Wendy Stone, throwing her from her motorcycle and killing her; the motorcycle traveled another 1,000 yards (that’s over half a mile!) before crashing.

Second, to Harvey Oshrin. Harvey was driving a Mercedes in the northbound lanes in front of Wendy that was destroyed when the truck landed on it. Harvey is my mother-in-law’s boyfriend. Here is Harvey’s car after the crash:

Harvey spent a few days in the hospital due to injuries but he’s at home now and apparently feeling well enough to go out this afternoon with me, Jim, and Joan (my mother-in-law) for a Mother’s Day meal at Famous Dave’s in Vista, best barbecue in San Diego County.

I’m a firm believer that when it’s your time to go, it’s your time to go. If it’s not your time to go, you can say prayers of thanks to God, thank modern medicine, call it a miracle, whatever. All it means to me is that it wasn’t your time to go. If you look at Harvey’s car, the passenger area is completely destroyed. That’s normally where Joan sits. She wasn’t with Harvey that day, so it obviously wasn’t her time to go.

Here’s an NBC web site report on the crash. I think it’s interesting that the last line of the article says, “The drivers of the truck and sedan were not seriously injured.” Granted, any injury won’t be as serious as death, but personally I think a few days in the hospital due to injuries would warrant calling them serious injuries. Of course, NBC didn’t know how serious the injuries were at the time they posted the article.

Readers who have been with me a long time might recognize the following pictures. All have been used in Friday Flower Fiestas before. I consider them some of my best and I use them here for two of the best people in my life: Joan and Harvey.

Datura

A beautiful but dangerous flower

Friday Flower Fiesta

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Today’s Friday Flower Fiesta features only one flower but three pictures of that flower, as well as a little discussion about the flower.

Datura

Datura

That is a flower of the Datura plant. Common names include moonflower, angel’s trumpet, witches weed, nightshade, thorn apple, Indian apple, devil’s trumpet, jimsonweed, and henbane. Older plant books might also have them listed as Brugmansia plants. However, modern genetics has been able to separate Datura and Brugmansia into two species.

There are two main differences that will help you determine whether your plant is a Datura or a Brugmansia:

Datura is usually a vine with large, erect flowers.

Brugmansia is usually a bush or small tree with large, pendulent flowers.

Both species contain tropane alkaloids in their milky white sap, as well as the flowers. Tropane alkaloids can cause severe skin irritation, blindness, loss of voice, kidney damage, hallucinations, and in some cases, death.

Unfortunately, some children know of their hallucinogic properties and sometimes make Datura or Brugmansia tea to drink. Those same children often suffer permanent vocal chord and kidney damage, and too many have died.

Both Datura and Brugmansia look beautiful. At night the flowers open wide, becoming some of the most aromatic flowers on Earth. However, if you brush up against the leaves of the Datura species during the day, you’ll stink as bad as a skunk.

At the home I owned from 1999-2001, I had several Daturas and Brugmansias, and as soon as the sun went down, the aroma could be smelled blocks away. I did have to wear long sleeves and long pants whenever I pruned them because I have a severe skin reaction to the sap.

If you have either of these two plants at your house, protect them from children, dogs, cats, and unknowing adults.
