Cats—She still loves me but only under her conditions

Cats

I was worried about my relationship with Zoey the Cool Cat. She has her little comfort spots that she rotates to every 3-5 days, but at night, or whenever I needed a nappy, she was always right there with me. Not so in our new home.

I think I found the problem….

Windows.

She’s got to have a window that she can see out of.

In our new place I put blackout curtains on the bedroom window where I take nappies. Zoey the Cool Cat had never joined me in that bedroom. Not even interested. Just walked on by as if the door was closed.

Until two days ago when I was so tired that I left the curtains open. When I woke up, I couldn’t move. My legs were numb. A-ha! (not the group). Zoey the Cool Cat had jumped up on the bed and made herself comfortable on my legs, oriented so that she could see out the window. I got up and left her on the bed, and this is how I found her a couple of hours later:

Zoey the Cool Cat in bed

This morning I went out at 9:00, which is usually about the time she is worn out from running around window to window to window watching the wildlife. I came back at 11:30, and this is what I found:

Problem solved. Curtains shall remain open and I’ll be adding tinting to the window so we can see out but no one can see in.

Zoey the Cool Cat still loves me but only under her conditions….

I'm Zoey the Cool Cat, and I approve this post

Another alternative to the tinting is to place a little platform on the ledge of that window, so you can still close the curtains but around it. In that case, I’d also suggest having an one-inch ‘wall’ on the in side of the platform (the curtains’ side), so she can have a reference to where it ends, while she’s sleeping. I say that because that was a solution that worked for me/us years ago, under similar conditions. That, of course, if she’s up to it; there’s always a chance she may have objections about your skills as an architect, or perhaps how steady is the platform. She may also decide, as you know, that no place feels as good as on top of your legs, specially when they get numb. Or another number of possibilities. If that’s the case, all bets are off. Hope it helps. Cheers

Our previous house had very high windows, so I had platforms at all the windows and ways for her to easily get up to those platforms. Also, since we were 50 feet in the air with no one else as high as us, privacy was not a concern. We didn’t even have blinds or curtains on the windows. This place, though, has low window sills and all rooms and both neighbors are at ground level. She has checked out all the windows that have curtains and has sat on the window sill, but not for very long. She by far prefers the windows with nothing on them so she can see out but keep an eye on everything inside, too. She’s finicky. Wait. No she’s not. She’s a cat…………LOL

Every cat likes to watch potential dinner scurrying around outside 🙂

I did a double-take at “whenever I needed a nappy”… that’s the English word for the American word “diaper”!
