Time flies by when you’re having fun….
I spent yesterday at the Surfing America’s 2017 USA Surfing Championships. Surfing is one of those sports where I change my Canon 760D’s settings to AI Servo tracking using all 19 focus points and burst mode. You might be tempted to just take videos and then capture a still photo from the video. Don’t. The still photo won’t be anywhere near as good as if you simply shot a still photo to begin with. Even with my drone’s 4K video, which is considered “movie quality,” a still capture is pretty poor. Just remember that videos are videos and still photos are still photos, and never the two shall meet….
I’m only 10% of the way through cataloging all the pictures from yesterday but here’s my favorite surfing picture so far.
I admit that I spent as much time watching and photographing wildlife as I did surfers. Following is one of my favorite wildlife pictures from the day. I told this big fella that I would make him an Internet star; he just sat there oblivious, seeming to smile at me, so……………….. (Check out his little goatee, too!)
Amazing surf shot!

Looks like that was my best surfing shot. My goal is to get such a shot with the surfer facing me. No surfer butt!……………LOL

The surfing shot is fantastic, but I Love Love Love the crab, and the look he’s giving you. 🙂

I don’t. I tried to ID him but all of the ID sites are only interested in commercial crabs for eating, of which I’m pretty sure, but not 100% sure, that this little one isn’t going to get to commercial size. The reason I say that is because there are a few billion of these things every time I go. This was the first time, though, that I had a lens that was capable of getting a good picture of one. I got a couple of interesting videos, too. See https://youtu.be/SZhkMuplz9M

Great shots. I don’t deal with video that much, I prefer stills, but it makes sense to me not to cross the two and not to just take a still from the video footage.

I used to think that way, too, but now with video cameras, drones, and some DSLR’s taking 4K video, and even 8K video, those stills taken from those videos are better than many DSLR cameras from just a few years ago!

It’s a bit stunning when you stop to think how fast some of the technology has changed just in the last few years.

Yep. I never followed up on my post here about stills and videos, and never the two shall meet. I actually am quite impressed with still captures from 4K videos. Their only problem is that they are not large so I couldn’t make anything more than an 8×10. Using 48 stills, I have created panoramas as large as 330×48. Can’t do that with stills from videos.

The technology might be able to handle the bigger prints eventually, of course then we will see what stills can do at that point.
