Music on Mondays (10-31-16)—Happy Halloween!

The Music Chronicles of Russel Ray

On October 10, I was backing up my big internal hard drive to a big external hard drive when both hard drives decided to crash simultaneously. I bought my first computer in 1978 and this is only my second and third hard drive crashes, so maybe I’m due.

I had a data recovery center work on the hard drives, and while they did recover 100% of my data, I then had to get my data back onto a computer so I could use it. I’ll tell you, when 100% of your life disappears, you don’t really know what to do. I spent exactly three weeks, to the minute, October 10 noon to October 31 noon not knowing if I could keep any of my businesses and activities going on. I didn’t even know what to do each day because my life is run 24/7 by Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. I was so depressed that I couldn’t get up the energy to get my camera, jump into the car, and head out into the world to take new pictures. Taking pictures usually is the easiest way for me to deal with depression, but in this case all it did was remind me that I had lost 100% of about a million pictures. So, that’s where I have been for the last three weeks, just in case anyone missed me.

Meanwhile, today is Halloween, and I can tell you that losing your computer work is definitely spooky. So let’s explore a little spookiness in music and pictures from my personal collection, which I have back.

Russel, I picked a good day to say I’m still alive & nice to see you are too…barely…with your hard drive & backup crashing! I use an external backup auxiliary hard drive too, but I also use a flashdrive backup periodically. I highly recommend it especially with all your photos!!! –Very nice Halloween touches today for Music Monday! I know you chart bloggers & view blogs only if we qualify by your standard. I post 6 times a year now. I’ve had my website for 5 years now. May this find you well. Phil from excuseusforliving.com

Hey, Phil. I am moving away from HDD now in preference to SSD. I have two new 1TB SSD and a 320 GB SSD. I’ve been going through my files while they were transferring and deleting stuff that I don’t need. Collecting digital files for me is like hoarders collecting physical stuff in their homes; what a mess. Now that I have things squared away, though, I’m really impressed with the SSD; small, slim, and fast. Shortly I’m going to be ordering a custom-made i7 computer with lots of SSD and memory because I use on almost an hourly basis Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Bridge, and Excel while playing music. Those Adobe programs are memory hogs, and Photoshop won’t release memory after closing the program so I have to do the old Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up Task Manager and close the processes. One would think that Adobe could get its stuff together but they are one of those companies that, like some of my professors at Texas A&M, think the world revolves around them.

I have to confess – Monster Mash and Purple People Eater shares were my saving grace, as I wonder what the world is coming too, tonight, and see the ‘classics’ still survive! LOL Many Empathies on the crash/recovery process – the secret to surviving is learning to not care what’s locked in the hardware – 🙂 Been through only 2 in my lifetime, but one crash lost all the original music recorded (not written down) by my son, who didn’t use backups/external hard drives, etc., who left this plane too early – I have to say, I still grieve that loss, now and again – BUT, I hear the music via my own internal database/memory bank – and the conversations we had when he shared his Works-In-Progress with me AND, until the vagrancies of old age steal those files away – well… Can trip down memory lane any old time I choose – 🙂

One of my neighbors commented on the number of trick-or-treaters tonight. Zero. She was upset. I asked her, “Do you really think parents are going to let their children dress up anonymously and wander around a neighborhood going to strange houses and asking for candy in today’s world with all the hatred and violence that Trump is inciting?” She said, “Good point.”
