Testing for horsepower

Out & About

The first time I went to Houston was 1973 when I was 18. I was mesmerized by the freeways, especially the “spaghetti bowl” interchanges in and around downtown. When I moved to Houston in 1977, I often would drive out of my way just to drive the spaghetti bowls. Of course, that was back when gas was 59¢ a gallon….

Here in San Diego we don’t have a lot of great spaghetti bowl interchanges but one of my favorite is the interchange in Mission Valley where Interstate 8 passes under Interstate 805. It’s a huge interchange. Looks like this:

It’s possible to see Tokyo to the west and New York City to the east from the top of the 805…..

Going north is a long, steady climb, while going south is a steeper, shorter climb. Both sides make for a great test drive in a new car if you’re searching for horsepower….. Just sayin’.

Personally I don’t like highways. Especially when I am unfamiliar with an area. We lived in San Antonio, Texas for one year when my step-dad was stationed there at Fort Sam Houston. I was so glad I didn’t know how to drive yet. I think it was more of a nightmare. That was back in 71-72. I drive the highways when I have to but it is nice to know the off roads too when I don’t want to be rushed. 🙂

Since around 1973, I have made it a point never to be rushed while driving a car. I just think it’s too dangerous. Now, with my new Toyota Corolla, which gets 29/38 mpg and has a USB flash drive for the stereo, I’m even in less rush than ever before. Driving to see the sights is wonderful!

We took a ride around the countryside this afternoon. Mostly gravel roads, but it was nice. And it wasn’t even on a Sunday! We did our Sunday drive around on a Monday. Love to be different now and then. Seen some new sites and some old. 😀

Nope. Flooded roads are, though. We’ve been hit by two powerful storms the past two days. That area in the picture is now flooded. More storms coming today and tomorrow. I’m going to try to get some good flood pictures either today or tomorrow.
