Worst. Weekend. Ever.

Out & About

This past weekend was my worst weekend ever since I arrived in San Diego on April 27, 1993.

Two consecutive days of rain.

Hard rain.

Lasting for hours and hours.

Two wettest July days in San Diego ever in history.

Making it the wettest July in San Diego ever in history.

The San Diego Padres, who claim to be a professional baseball team (current record 43-49, 9½ games out of first, but on a 4-game winning streak), first time ever in history rained out in July. It was their first rainout since April 4, 2006, and only the seventeenth rainout in their 47-year history.

Long-time readers know that one of the best places to go in San Diego when it’s raining is Ocean Beach.

Here are four pictures taken during the rain, thunder, lightning, and high winds:

I stayed until dusk when lights started coming on, and as I was walking back to the car, I saw this business sign:

I guess the only thing to say is, “Bless you!”

Imagine the remnants of a hurricane (Hurricane Dolores) bringing this kind of rain to San Diego in July……………smh.
With this and a very strong El Niño expected this fall/winter, this might be the end of the drought.

I’m grinning from ear to ear. S. Cal needs rain so bad and doesn’t know what to do with it. I guess moving to Oregon was a good call for me. I LOVE the rain. We need some badly. Fish are dying in the lakes and rivers. Not enough water. The planet has tilted sideways. It is so rare for the hurricanes to affect your area. Sorry you had a miserable weekend though.

Did you take Zooey to the OB dog park by Robb Field in the thunderstorm? 😀 I was up in Carmel Valley house/dog sitting and we had quite a lightning show most of Saturday. Sunday was looking much better until around 2 pm when the sun did the disappearing act and it rained nonstop until well past 8. It even tried to flood back in my ‘hood (North Park)… and that’s on top of the Uptown mesa! 😛

Ha! Zoey the Cool Cat went out on the balcony once and got a single raindrop on her precious fur. She scurried back inside, hid under the bed, and didn’t go anywhere near the door to the balcony for the rest of the storm.

I know we have mosquitoes and roaches here in San Diego, but I can count on one hand the number of times I have been bitten by a mosquito and seen a roach. 22 years here. Back in my native Texas, I used to get bitten every five seconds and roaches were a dime a dozen.

The heat the past 2 days in North Cal were not funny at all since no one has A/C, but the glorious rain! Oh! Most exciting thing that happened all week! I live in an agricultural corridor of the state. Rain makes us gloriously happy.

Rain makes most people here happy, too. Even I might be happy if people knew how to drive in the rain. Normally there are something like 50 accidents a day in San Diego County. When it rains, that sometimes spikes to more than 1,000 accidents that day! Even if one wanted to go out in the rain, it’s almost impossible because of the traffic tie-ups due to accidents.

I loved the rain! And I really LOVE the sun, but this was such a terrific change! And thunder and lightning. I haven’t heard thunder since 1990.

Sorry the rain sort of ruined your weekend, but at least you got some cool pictures.
