It’s the largest I’ve ever seen

Picture of the Moment

One interesting thing that I noticed while driving 476 miles throughout Southern California this past Thursday is that crosses are very popular in the desert, specifically crosses marketing spots where people died, probably from car accidents, although all of the crosses I stopped at did not have names or circumstances posted.

Excepting crosses on top of churches, here is the largest cross I have ever seen built as a memorial of some type along the roadside:

Wooden Cross

Julian made a beautiful piece of Photographic Art out of it, and prints (matted, canvas, metal, acrylic, or unframed) are available for purchase in my Religious gallery at Fine Art America.

People here often leave bunches of flowers at the scenes of recent car accidents, but the authorities are discouraging the practice – other people driving past tend to look at the flowers to see what they’re for, which can lead to more accidents.
Of course, we’re talking tight bends in the road and so on, not a nice big open desert!

But in the nice big open desert, people tend to drive faster than normal (been there, done that!). With the gently undulating road that can send cars flying as they come up out of a trough, possibly with alcohol involved, and then a beautiful memorial appears to distract everyone…………..

Nice cross Russel. With roadside memorials we had a stretch of road near the Glasshouse Mountains that claimed 11 lives over about 6 years. The government wanted the memorials removed, not because of the distraction I believe but it was showing how dangerous the road was. They ended up resurfacing it and down went the accidents. Funny that.
