Music on Mondays (8-18-14)—Missing you

The Music Chronicles of Russel Ray

On January 2, 2014, I upgraded from Internet Explorer 8 to 9.

I didn’t realize it until March 27, 2014, but the day I upgraded from 8 to 9 was the day that I started having WordPress problems when I visited other blogs. LIKE buttons and comment boxes would not load, but only on blogs whose URL ended in wordpress.com.

If someone had an upgraded or self-hosted blog with a URL like mine (russelrayphotos2.com), there were no problems.

The ratio of free (wordpress.com) blogs to upgraded/self-hosted blogs (russelrayphotos.com) is about nine to one.

Since I could not interact with bloggers on nine out of ten blogs that I visited, I kind of quit trying. Thus I got about ten months behind in my daily blogging/liking/commenting life.

On March 27, 2014, I upgraded from Internet Explorer 9 to 10. All problems immediately ceased, and I set about catching up on my daily blogging/liking/commenting life. I like to be about 30 days behind, i.e., if you visit me today, I’ll be by to see you in about 30 days. That allows for people who don’t post very often to have at least 30 days in which to publish just one post. Just one!

Sadly, many people that I was following have quit blogging. At one time my Excel spreadsheet had 3,879 links to bloggers that I was following. That is down to 2,460. Over fourteen hundred people have quit!

So for today’s Music on Mondays, I thought we would listen to some songs about how much I miss you.

Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
Something to think about this Monday morning – the first day of the week and also of the rest of our lives – is there someone that you were close to, laughed with, liked being around that you have not seen for a while – perhaps after listening to Russel’s selection of music this morning it might, like me encourage you to reach out and touch their lives again. Hugs.

Actually, I think you have many fewer problems because your blog is not upgraded automatically. Thus, if you find a WordPress version that you really like, stick with it.

Originally, I thought it would be awesome to always have the latest and the greatest, but with the continuous buggy and automatic upgrades from WordPress and Adobe, I am not a fan at all.

I have turned automatic upgrades off for my Adobe products. I wish WordPress would let us turn off upgrades. Unfortunately, the only way to turn off WordPress upgrades is to go the self-hosted route.

If I had it to do all over again, I would never let WordPress host my blog.

The one you are at right now, russelrayphotos2.com, is an upgrade through WordPress, which is why it shows russelrayphotos2.com as the URL instead of russelrayphotos2.wordpress.com.

My others blogs are self-hosted at avahost.net.

Self-hosted blogs also happen to be much less expensive than upgraded blogs. For example, I pay $99 a year for the upgrade here. Over at avahost.net I pay $100 a year total for five web sites, of which three are wordpress blogs.

No. Not that I haven’t tried, but WordPress pretty much keeps free blogs completely separate from self-hosted blogs. There is very little support for the self-hosted blogs, so if you don’t know WordPress very well, I’d start with a free one and really get to know it and then move to self-hosting.

Hi Russel, just saying g’day to my Mate David. That’s a lot of bloggers dropping out of view. Do you think they re-invent themselves with a new blog. Sadly today your videos didn’t load.

Some were deleted but most were simply inactive. I usually give people three months of inactivity before summarily deleting them from my spreadsheet.

Re the videos, YouTube is popular but it might be because there is no alternative. Personally I don’t like them, preferring Grooveshark if I’m going to listen to something. More music and fewer advertising, or at least advertising that isn’t intrusive.

Wham! You’re off the spread sheet. Love it. You’re right there’s no use following someone who isn’t present. My browser didn’t load the videos today, must be a lag thing. Their ads are intrusive but I guess they have to pay the bills. I like the ones that you can click off after 5 seconds. 🙂

You have no idea how many people I tried to contact. Finally, on March 27, I was reading through the WordPress forums looking for something completely different and there, on page 2,395,729,491,113 was a little comment about how Internet Explorer 9 caused problems with WordPress blogs whose URL ended in wordpress.com. The commenter explained exactly what was going on and touched on all the problems I was having. I immediately followed his suggestion to upgrade to Internet Explorer 10, and voila!, problems solved.

I am avoiding the upgrades, Russel. I learned the hard way by upgrading in the past. I have been having so much trouble lately, like finding blogs in my reader that SAY I am following, but I know I am not. Tell me, how does THAT happen? I also thank you for the music. It started my Monday off nicely! Love, Amy
