Imperial Beach, California

Out & About

A few months ago a friend asked me what my favorite beach was in San Diego County. I replied, “Imperial Beach.” She was shocked, yet she had never been there.

I like it because it’s never crowded, it’s a very wide beach, there is a good selection of food establishments nearby and on the pier, and it’s a very clean beach. The more popular beaches here (Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla) are very crowded, the beaches are not as wide, and they are full of kelp. Sometimes the kelp can really be a stinky mess full of sand flies, making for a very unpleasant visit to the beach.

So this afternoon she asked me to take her, her son, and her son’s friend to Imperial Beach, which I was only too happy to do.

Following are a few pictures and a video of a cockatoo entertaining the small crowd at the pier:

Gosh, (this may not be the first time I’m saying this, but) it’s really great to see nice pictures where there’s not a trace of snow. We’re buried here in the East Coast, so I’m glad that at least some of us are getting to smell the seashore fresh air. Thanks for that, Ray. Best, Wesley

Russel Ray, Imperial Beach! Got it, whenever we get to southern CA!!! Besides the exquisite photos, what I like about you posts is that they provide specific down to the point information & do so succinctly. Don’t you hate it with today’s writers & especially so called sophisticated journalism ( like the Sunday New York Times Arts & Leisure section & Travel section, Magazine, etc., not to mention Time Magazine & almost everything today, on-line too) trying to read & find out what’s your point, what the hell are you telling me, or just trying to find the information you want in the article????? Well, you get right to the point! Thanks! Phil

I understand! Our weekly San Diego Reader likes to publish restaurant reviews. Good luck in finding the restaurant, though, because there never is an address mentioned, or even a city for that matter! So frustrating….

You my friend are living the dream. Just to be able to drive to the beach and enjoy all the sand and salt air, I’m so envious. Loved the cockatoo. My brother rescued one from a shop named Rowdy. He was so stressed he had pulled out all his feathers. Rowdy now has a home with another Cockatoo and is so much happier and healthier. That beach bird looks like he’s having fun, they are very social and are happier with a friend.
