Would you look at the size of that thing!

At one of the schools where I teach chess, we have about 50 students in class.

There are four chess teachers, so the teacher-to-student ratio is only about 12:1.

After all the students are in class, here’s what the wall outside the classroom looks like:

Notice how all but two are backpacks? The two in the lower left corner are luggage. But look at the size of that blue one. I don’t have any luggage that big! I think the parents must be airplane pilots or flight attendants. 🙂

I’m also thinking that the bones in these little ones have not fully developed yet. I shudder to think what kind of health problems these children will have as adults. Thankfully they’ll have the advantages of the Affordable Care Act. Thank you, President Obama!

Yahoo for chess! and I had a luggage cart when I went to elementary school … it is hard to believe these days.. but I carted a cello home after school three days a week… yea no car rides for me until the snow fell.. .and then sometimes even then.

    Hi Russel,
I tried to get my kids to take a backpack on wheels to school after lifting their WAY too heavy packs full of books (this was middle and high school), but the wheeled pack was WAY too nerdy for them. A study said older students were suffering serious back injuries from carrying such heavy packs to and fro and around school all day, since many schools don’t allow the kids a locker to store packs in, for fear that they will hide drugs and weapons there. Love the shot of all the backpacks lined up on the wall.

Ah-ha! So that’s why these schools don’t have lockers. Interesting. If it’s not one thing, it’s another. However, couldn’t they hide drugs and weapons in their backpacks and luggage carts?

No doubt, that rolling tote is banana’s. When I was in school, I got a locker. I was surprised to learn from Alys that her young fellow has to carry everything home, every day…throw in a couple of text books and that’s not good for kids at all. Alys’s guys are tall but imagine a squirt? I was maybe 4′ 10″ in grade 6 and probably weighed 70 lbs. I think that’s crazy.

There are some kindergartners whose backpacks are bigger than they are, and weigh more, too! What could a kindergartner possibly need for a three-hour school day that couldn’t be left at home?
