Irvine Spectrum Center—It’s fabulous!

Out & About

Sometimes I have problems convincing newfound friends that I am, indeed, gay. It might have something to do with me liking fast cars, motorcycles, and sports instead of your stereotypical musicals, theatre, hairdressing, flowers, interior design……… 🙂

One area where the gay stereotype does not fail me is in my love for shopping. Even if there is no money left in my monthly budget, window shopping for next month’s budget is just fine……..er, dandy…….er, fabulous!

Between San Diego and Los Angeles there are several great shopping malls. One of my favorite is the Irvine Spectrum Center. Coincidentally, it is located in Irvine, California.

It is an outdoor mall, a style with which I was unfamiliar until I came to San Diego, and has your standard mall fare—Barnes & Noble, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, California Pizza Kitchen, Johnny Rockets, Red Robin, Ruby’s, and The Improv. The outside screenshots of the fictional Mall of Miami from “Austin and Ally” takes place at the Irvine Spectrum Center. If you get tired of shopping (?!), you can always relax on the merry-go-round or the Ferris wheel, permanent entertainment in the middle of the mall.

Ferris wheels lend themselves naturally to having fun with them in Photoshop, and just for your viewing pleasure, I have had my fun and will share it with you here. Each picture was created with just one or two mouse clicks using default presets; nothing complicated but a lot of fun.

Wow! You must have started in a different part of the country than I did. When I was little, we had outdoor malls (no, I am not really old) here in Michigan. And we get a fair amount of snow here.

I grew up in Texas. The summer heat and humidity caused everything to be indoors. I remember my first job in Houston. I woke up in my air conditioned apartment, took the air conditioned elevator down to the air conditioned underground parking lot, drove my air conditioned car to the air conditioned underground parking lot for my office building, took the air conditioned elevator to the air conditioned walkway over the street to my air conditioned office. Except when I went outdoors to play tennis, I never had to get out of air conditioning!………….lol

All four effects on the Ferris wheel are beautiful! My favourite is the black and white nostalgic look one, but I can see all four as posters or as covers of greeting cards. Very nice.

That’s a destination not just a shopping centre! Funny you should mention surprise at seeing an open-air mall for the first time…I never knew they existed until I took my first vacation to Phoenix. Great idea for warm weather locations!

Don’t beat yourself up, though. It’s a rather new mall, being built from 1995 to 2005, or something like that, and it’s in Irvine. No one ever went to Irvine except UC-Irvine teachers and students!……..lol
