Happy World Turtle Day!

Did you know?

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Today is World Turtle Day, started in 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, itself founded as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation in 1990.

Celebrations occur worldwide — people dressing up as turtles or wearing “turtle green” clothes, research activities, arts & crafts projects, and even specific turtle lesson plans in classrooms.

Did you know that if you find a turtle crossing a road and decide to help it so it doesn’t get hit by a car, you should point it in the same direction it was traveling, so take it to the side of the road that it was traveling to and point it away from the road. If you take it to the side of the road from which it came, even if you point it away from the road then, it will turn around and start to cross the road again.

And what do I do for World Turtle Day? Why post a bunch of turtle pictures, of course!

I love the turtles, especially the sea turtles, and I love them so much that I paint them. I have painted sea turtles, giant tortoises from the Galapagos Islands, and abstract tortoises 600 pounders. Thanks for all the turtles! I just painted a turtle I like to call Turtle Island, powerhouse reds and a black background that will be featured in my Fine Art and Poetry book at the end of this year. Celebrating over a decade of books and this blog makes me think of how glad I am to meet new artists. Thank you.

The beauty and content of your works has restored some of my lost inspiration of seeing the world go to pieces in the genocide in progress by elite 1% as they melt the poles for profit. I needed this blog like a desert traveler needs a drink of water from pristine well of pure clean water. Thank you and God bless you.

Russel, please see my Saved Turtle posts! So many people don’t like them…WHY? I love the lil guys…I have a red eared slider, Yellow Eared slider and 3 painted…They each have their own personalities and traits…I also advocate for helping them cross the road…in fact on e evening while on dinner at work my other half met me and we stopped and saved a HUGE Snapper crossing the road…I have pics I should blog about it…anyways so nice to meet a fellow Turtle advocate…the Red footed Tortoise…So Beautiful…

I didn’t know about World Turtle Day. This is what I miss about my brother no longer living in San Diego. They had two turtles. Both were rescues and lived in their backyard pond. Unfortunately, a hawk grabbed one and dropped it. The turtle survived, thankfully, because it landed in an outdoor vase and was returned to my brother’s family.

I have heard from some professional birders that I hang with that birds that prey on turtles will drop them to crack the shell.

A few months ago, during the winter rainy season here, I saw some gulls doing the same thing with clams. Quite interesting to watch.

Okay, so maybe I’m living under a rock instead of on top of a log like a turtle, but I had no idea May 23 was World Turtle Day! But then I came across your post and another stating the, ummm, obvious. I did stop my car on a highway once to move along a tortoise but I don’t remember which side of the road I left him on. Darn!
