They’ll come from miles around

Picture of the moment

My wise old grandmother was not fond of four-letter words. At least, not your traditional four-letter words. She did have three favorites, though. She told me they were the most powerful positive four-letter words in the English language:

  1. Love
  2. Help
  3. Free

She loved people and she loved helping them (heck, she adoped me as a juvenile delinquent when I was almost 11—if that’s not love and help, I don’t know what is), and she was always free with her time and words of wisdom.

Although she died in 2003, I’m reminded of her everytime I see the word free, and it’s one of those words that is used a lot:

Use just that one word and they’ll come from miles around.

One other thing my wise old grandmother said about free is that if someone offers you something free, take it, even if you don’t want it. Don’t turn down gifts. If you decide later that you don’t want it, you can give it to someone else, either a friend, a charity, someone in need, the Church….

Now you know why I call her my wise old grandmother.

I enjoyed reading about your Grandmother – she sounds like an amazing woman.
By co-incidence her birthday is the same as mine.
January 26th is Australia Day and a public holiday. When I was very small I used to jokingly tell people that Australia has a public holiday to commemorate my birthday. LOL.

Let your words flow
