If you look closely….
I just started birding again this past January, after a 39-year sabbatical. Consequently, I don’t have the best lens for birding. My walkaround lens is a 28-300mm Tamron lens. At the 300mm end I can occasionally get a good picture of a bird if either of two conditions are met:
-
The bird is close to me.
-
I do some serious cropping in Photoshop.
The following pictures are from a March birding expedition to the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Tijuana River County Open Space Preserve. If you look closely, you can find a bird or two in each picture. My intent was to do some serious cropping in Photoshop, but after looking at these pictures, I think I’ll leave them alone because I like the landscapes.
This first picture has nine birds in it, the most of any of my pictures:
Picture 3 — A vernal pool, too!
Picture 9 — We didn’t have to walk in the mud!
Picture 10 — Nobody knew what these were. Don’t forget to look for the bird!
Picture 14 — You might need x-ray vision to see the bird here.

Picture 15 — My second favorite picture.
Picture 16 — My favorite picture.

Out & About San Diego — I want power! Now!
San Diego County has about three million people living in it, so it’s obvious that somewhere there is really heavy industry, like power plants. There is a nuclear power plant in San Onofre, offline currently due to cooling rod problems. There is a standard power plant on the Chula Vista waterfront, also offline because they are going to be tearing it down. Those were the only two I knew of until recently when I found this one:
That’s the Otay Mesa Energy Center. In the olden days it would have been called a “power plant.” Words….
I drove all around it because it really looked interesting, and it was:
The Otay Mesa Energy Center is located at 606 De La Fuente Court:
I found that the whole South Bay, from the Tijuana River Estuary south of Imperial Beach, along the border with Mexico, all the way over to Lower Otay Lakes and the Otay County Open Space Preserve in south-central San Diego County, was a great place to take pictures of unusual nature and unusual urbanity.

Sit Stay Heal
I see benches everywhere but no one sitting on them. Even at the bus stops, people won’t sit on the benches, for some reason preferring to stand.

Maybe my next set of bench pictures will require a tripod and camera remote control, to be titled “Self portraits on benches.” Or something like that.
