#7: Hope I die before I get old

With apologies to The Who, “Hope I die before I get old.”

Police and ambulanceI stood there.

Pumping gas.

Watching.

Wondering.

Watching some more.

Taking pictures.

This morning after my home inspection, I stopped to get gas. As I was pumping gas, I heard  a bunch of cars start honking their horns. There was a car at the green traffic signal that was just sitting there. A little old lady, alone, in the driver’s seat. Sitting there. Cars eventually got around her, gave her the bird as they passed by, honked some more, yelled obscenities.

Light turned green. She sat there. Again. Cars once more got around her, gave her the bird, honked, yelled obscenities.

A guy from the gas station ran over, opened the driver’s door, turned off the car, and took the keys. He deemed her not capable of driving.

They guy and little old lady had a conversation — that’s being polite — for about five minutes while several other people gathered ’round.

Cops were called. Fire engine showed up (why is is that whenever you need an ambulance, a fire engine always shows up first?). One cop car. Two, three, four cop cars. Finally, an ambulance.

Deemed fit to drive, the little old lady got in her carAfter talking with the onlookers, the guy, and the little old lady for about 15 minutes, she was deemed fit to drive. Everyone left.

What do you think happened? I think she simply fell asleep at the red light. Better there than driving on the freeway at 70 mph.

What would you have done? I know what I would have done, because I did it. I stood there and watched. It’s a sad state of affairs when I will do nothing in a situation like that, but 18 years in California has made me like that. Mind my own business. Too many killings, carjackings, etc., for me to get involved.

What would you have done?
