My new favorite restaurant in San Diego is over on Coronado Island with this view of downtown San Diego:
My new favorite restaurant has a bright red roof and sticks out like, well, a sore thumb:
It was everything but a sore thumb, and the closer I got the more beautiful it became:
We looked at the menu outside, but as I was looking at the menu, I was glancing inside, and the interior was unique enough to make me want to go in and linger for a while, about as long as it takes to read the menu in more detail, have a drink and some food, pay the bill, and leave.
The exterior architecture certainly didn’t prepare me for the interior architecture:
There wasn’t a bad seat in my new favorite restaurant. I found myself looking at the interior just as much as the view of downtown San Diego.
The margarita was the second best I’ve ever had in San Diego County.
The reason it didn’t take the top spot is twofold: It was more expensive and in a smaller glass than #1.
We (my spouse and I) started off with a Shrimp Cocktail, $13.95, four large shrimp with a tangy cocktail sauce, and the “tangy cocktail sauce” was the best tangy cocktail sauce I think my mouth has ever wrapped itself around.
We had already eaten two shrimp when I remembered to take a picture. That was close. Otherwise we’d have no shrimp in the picture!
The tangy cocktail sauce itself was worth the $13.95! After we had eaten the four big, large, huge, jumbo shrimp, there was still tangy cocktail sauce left. Our waiter and three other waiters tried to remove the rest of the tangy cocktail sauce! Ha! Not on your life! I dipped my biscuits into the remaining tangy cocktail sauce until that aluminum dish was spotless! By the way, did I mention the tangy cocktail sauce?
For my entreé I had the Pacific Fire Shrimp, $26.95, jumbo shrimp baked with Island spices, fresh vegetables, garlic and butter, and served with steamed white rice.
Once again I had a little taste before remembering to take a picture. I’d make a horrible restaurant photographer; there’d be half-eaten dishes in the photos.
I’m not a fan of steamed white rice, and I didn’t like that at my new favorite restaurant. However, once I finished mixing it with the shrimp and sauces on the plate, as well as adding a little tangy cocktail sauce, all was well.
My spouse had Crab Stuffed Tilapia, $27.95, coated with breadcrumbs, stuffed with crab meat, baked and finished with a caper butter sauce and coconut ginger rice.
I thought it was cute how the rice was a little pyramid. He claimed the tilapia was the best he’d ever had, and who am I to doubt him? After all, I married him!
Location — ttttt. The view can only be equaled by a couple of nearby restaurants.
Service — ttttt. It’s obvious that the staff takes pride in the restaurant, all helping each other out. No extraordinary waiting for anything yet no feeling of being rushed so they can get the next table of guests in to pay the big bucks.
Food — ttttt. Out of this world! Everything was prepared to perfection.
Prices — ttttt. Also out of this world! This is not your “let’s go out to eat” restaurant. In my mind it requires a special occasion celebration to go here — anniversary (one of ours is May 26), birthday, graduation. In fact, we saw a lot of soon-to-be high school graduates who had just gotten their graduation robes and were out taking pictures in them. As with 39 years ago when I graduated high school, taking possession of that graduation robe still seems to mean that you really will be graduating, and that’s cause for celebration!
If you ever get to San Diego and want to go to Peohe’s Restaurant and Coronado Island for the day, I’d be happy to play docent. The bill’s on you, though.
