Rain — This is not the San Diego that I’ve come to know and love

This is the third consecutive day that it’s been raining here. This IS NOT the San Diego that I’ve come to know and love.

Yesterday I had to drive 90 miles round trip in the rain to have Christmas supper with my mother-in-law and her boyfriend. Jim and I decided to take it kind of slow so we hit a few of the side streets to see what Christmas decorations there might be. One of the places we stopped was Carlsbad Village. It was there that I got an unexpected surprise:

That’s the historic Carlsbad Depot built by the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad in 1887. It was Carlsbad’s first commercial building and also housed the telegraph office, a Wells Fargo bank, a United States Post Office, and the general store. The last passenger train stopped in 1957, and the depot was closed in 1960. The depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 30, 1993.

As I was standing there, an Amtrak train zoomed by, obviously at its maximum speed which I believe is 79 mph right there. The sound was loud and the wind rush felt like a hurricane. Interestingly, the Depot is used as the Carlsbad Visitor Center but there is no fence or anything between the Depot entrance and the tracks. I’m thinking that a visitor might be quite surprised by the unexpected Amtrak train zooming by, and I certainly hope the visitor doesn’t have a child running around loose. I see an accident waiting to happen.

I’ll be visiting again, when I have more time, to get some pictures of trains on the tracks next to the Depot. All I got yesterday was this one of the rear end of the southbound Amtrak train:
