God Bless Our Pets
I always love it when I get lost because invariably I find something new and interesting.
Two days ago I got lost up in Sorrento Valley, and while trying to find my way out of the Valley, I drove past a Pet Cemetery. I didn’t have time to stop because I was trying to get to the after-school chess class that I was going to be teaching.
I never knew that there really were pet cemeteries. Should have believed Stephen King all those decades ago (RIP Church!).
Today I went back, attempting to get lost again so I could visit the Pet Cemetery. I was successful.
I will have more about the Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery in posts this week but tonight I wanted to share a poem from a bronze plaque on a brick wall at the Cemetery:
GOD BLESS OUR PETS
They say memories are golden,
well, maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.
A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you,
you never would have died.
In life I loved you dearly,
in death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place,
no one could ever fill.
If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I’d walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one
the chain will link again.
I did extensive research on this poem and found that most sources credit it to “Anonymous.” I found one source that credited it to a person, but I believe that source was simply copying the anonymous poem from a blog by that person and inadvertently gave that person credit for the poem. A great example of how things can really get messed up in this Internet world if you don’t dig deep to find out what’s going on or what happened.
