Captain Morgan (OOB with Photoshop CC)
One of the Photoshop effects that I have been trying to do for over a year is the Out of Bounds (OoB or OOB) effect.
There are billions and billions and billions of tutorials, both still and video, but some of them leave out steps while others presume that I have knowledge that I don’t have, or that I 100% fully and completely understand layers and masks (I’m only at 75%!).
Yesterday I attempted to combine steps from several tutorials to see if I could get where I wanted to go, to see if I understood what the various steps were doing.
I was successful, although for my first attempt I chose a difficult photo to work with, so the results were pretty scary, although just right for Halloween.
This morning I took an easier photo to work with and refined my cobbled-together technique to get this:
The OOB effect makes it look like the subject of the picture is getting out of the picture. Depending on what you use for your subject matter, it can get quite interesting: a tree growing out of a picture, a race car racing out of the picture, perhaps even Zoey the Cool Cat climbing out of a picture to go visit you! All of those are on my mind. Let me practice some more and once I get my technique refined I’ll publish a tutorial to make it easy for you to do the same!
