Out & About — 13th Annual Toy Piano Festival
I had the pleasure of attending the 13th Annual Toy Piano Festival yesterday. It was held in the Seuss Room in the Geisel Library on the campus of the University of California at San Diego. The Geisel Library is one of the most recognizable buildings in San Diego County.
For more on the Geisel Library, see my blog post The Geisel Library at the University of California San Diego.
You might realize that “Seuss” and “Geisel” are the same person. Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, and his wife moved here to La Jolla just after World War II, and he died in La Jolla in 1991 at the age of 87. One of the pieces played was, I believe, from The Cat in the Hat Songbook. An excerpt:
There were several performers, some in Suess-inspired attire. Here’s a duet:
The final performance was the best simply because it required audience participation. An except from the Bubble Wrap Finale:
Toy pianos were on display not only at the Festival but throughout the library as well.
