Friday Flower Fiesta (8-16-13) — Summer poinsettias and more
My wise old grandmother adopted me when she was 56 and I was 11. After she got control of me, she forced me to dry the dishes, set the table, sweep the garage, hang the laundry out to dry…. child abuse…….. child labor…….. illegal in today’s world……….
I even had to prune the poinsettias before the summer was over. According to my wise old grandmother, that was so they would be tall and full of flowers by Christmas. We have poinsettia bushes throughout Southern California, and they will bloom whenever they darn well feel like it.
It’s no surprise, then, that professional growers can get their poinsettias to bloom whenever they want, and the recent San Diego County Fair had a nice selection:
Poinsettias were not the highlight of the Fair, though. Those were the rose competition (see 8-19-13 Friday Flower Fiesta) and the dahlia competition (see 7-26-13 Friday Flower Fiesta). However, throughout the fairgrounds, flowers were part of the Fair. Here are a few pictures of flowers used as accents and decoration from other exhibits and shows:
