Slow avocados ahead

Picture of the Moment

San Diego County produces over 60% of the avocados sold in the United States, making it the nation’s largest producer of avocados and allowing the County to call itself “The Avocado Capital of the United States.”

Interstate 15 from Escondido north is known as the Avocado Highway because of all the avocado groves on both sides of the freeway.

There are roadside signs telling you all about avocados, such as this one:

Slow avocados ahead

I appreciate that avocados like to go slow, but the speed limit is 70! Maybe some higher octane gas?

  1. Are there fast avocados, too? lol xoxoM

  2. That is a crack up. I always thought avocados were a little daft.

  3. Could they be a little slow in their thought processes? Perhaps they can’t cross the road as quick as other fruit. I remember a sign on a main road years ago, an old people’s home was nearby, it read ‘Slow Old People Ahead.’

  4. LOL You wouldn’t want avocado road kill, so slow down.

  5. Yes, and they’re slow to ripen too. Love them. How lucky you are be in their heartland.

  6. Do they have a hunting season for those slow avocados? I love funny road signs and this one is great!

  7. It’s been umpteen years ago, but I’ve been through there many times. Guess back in the “old” days, avocados were much speedier.

  8. LOVE that sign. :D Makes me appreciate punctuation all over again.

  9. Surely it’s the speedy avocados that would be ahead.

  10. I heard that Tom Selleck has an Avacado Farm in California too…didn’t see him on your travels did you? HA, slow avacado’s, should send that one to the Ellen Show.

  11. Nothing worse than getting stuck behind a herd of slow avocados, though farther north, slow artichokes run a close second. Or is that crawl a close second?

  12. made me larf & larf….

  13. :D In truth, I’ve never seen a fast Avo before, so I’m really not sure why they needed the sign :)

  14. Cute! Do they grow on trees?

  15. Dearest Sand Diego thank you for my Avocados! They are YUMMY!

  16. I’ve known a few slow avocados in my day….

  17. I need sugar and milk to stop over there in avocado highway lol :)

  18. I can’t imagine life without avo’s. Never tried slow ones.

  19. .. lol.. Now I understand why they reach the Netherlands completely overripe.. :D
