Do not touch the water!

Out & About

I find it interesting that of the many lakes in San Diego County, not a single one is natural. All are water reservoirs for thirsty Southern Californians living in San Diego County.

I also find it interesting that people are not allowed to swim in the lakes, more properly called reservoirs, nor even make contact with the water. Everything that I’ve read indicates that it has to do with water quality. But here’s what I don’t understand: Why are boats allowed on the reservoirs? Quite frankly, I’d rather drink water that has had people swimming in it than water that has had a boat, especially a motorboat spouting gas fumes, leaking gas, and leaking oil, in it, not to mention all the fish and birds in the water. More relevant, though, is the fact that the water is purified before we drink it. So what really gives?

One of the nicest reservoirs in the area is Lake Poway:

  1. Don’t throw rocks at the birds. Must be a serious problem.

  2. What a shame when it looks so inviting. How sad that they feel they had to remind people not to throw rocks at the birds.

  3. i agree with you about the boats … surely petrochemicals are worse pollutants than a bit of natural sweat and dirt?

  4. Do not make bodily contact with the reservoirs!! Sounds heathy.. D:

  5. Did they move Area 51 to San Diego County and then cover it with a reservoir?

  6. What happens if you fall in? Do you dissolve or are you dragged away never to be seen again?!

  7. That post made Zoey sit up and take notice. She’s been lazing about for ages. Bodily contact prohibited? How else am I going to contact?

  8. Especially lovely photos today–must be the sunshine. We have light snow and grey skies again up here.

  9. Hi Russel,
Isn’t something like that true for the whole of Texas? What I mean is that – to the best of my knowledge – there’s only ONE natural lake in Texas, Caddo Lake. And that’s not even completely in Texas, isn’t it?
Best regards from south central Texas,
    Pit

  10. Love the photos! I agree with you. It does not make sense to allow boats and not people. Whose to say one of the paddle boaters has not run their fingers through the water as they paddle along?

  11. I have often wondered the same thing. It would be interesting to know the real reason.

  12. Don’t let a person in, however fish do it in the water and birds crap in it, hmmm.

  13. That is so strange about the boats! Do you think it’s because the water isn’t safe for humans to swim in versus it being a fear of human “contaminating” the water?
