Blue Bell Ice Cream in San Diego!

Out & About

My birthday yesterday ended with a super meal at Joe’s Crab Shack.

Not only do they always have good food and margaritas, but they always seem to be located in great locations on the beach or near the water.

My favorite location is at 525 E. Harbor Drive, right at the Embarcadero Marina Park South behind the Convention Center. I don’t understand the address because if you go to 525 E. Harbor Drive you’ll be smack dab in the middle of the Convention Center with nary a Joe’s Crab Shack in sight. You have to go down to Park Boulevard where the tall Hilton Hotel is, turn right, and go behind the Convention Center to Embarcadero Marina Park South. Park Boulevard changes into Convention Way which then changes into Marina Park Way. Joe’s Crab Shack is at the end of Marina Park Way; it’s the only building there so you can’t miss it. Looks like this:

And here is where it actually is located, address notwithstanding:

I had, well, I don’t know what I had. I didn’t memorize it because I thought I could get it off of the online menu. Nope. The online menu is completely different from the menus we had. It was good, though, with three shrimp, dirty rice, blackened redfish, asparagus (can’t believe someone still serves asparagus!), and three clam shells with a mixture of clams and some other stuff. Here’s a picture:

As you can see, I ate one of the clam shell thingies before remembering to take a picture. Sorry about that…………..

Of course, the requisite margarita accompanied the meal. This one is a Tie Dye Swirl Margarita:

I can’t remember if I’ve ever had a slice of pineapple soaked in alcohol, but I’ll remember now. That was yummy! Well worth the price of admission……….

Would you believe the best was yet to come? There sitting on the table was a little placard telling us that Blue Bell Ice Cream was available. The caveat was that it was only available as peaches & cream ice cream on top of a huge dish of peach cobbler:

If you’ve never had Blue Bell Ice Cream, you don’t know what you’re missing. I consider it to be the best ice cream in the country. It’s made “at the little creamery” in Brenham, Texas. The CEO, Paul Kruse, is a graduate of my alma mater, Texas A&M University; we’re both Class of 1977. We were also in the same fraternity together, Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. Paul is an umpteenth generation member of the family that founded Blue Bell back in 1907.

While researching Blue Bell Ice Cream, I discovered a Mr. Scoops Ice Cream that claims to be the only retailer of Blue Bell Ice Cream in San Diego. Unfortunately, they don’t have any locations……… Hmmm.

I did remember to take a picture of the scrumptious dessert before taking a bite:

    • I don’t think Blue Bell will ever leave Texas. They started selling it in Yuma AZ back in the late 1990s but haven’t made it across the AZ/CA border yet so I still can’t buy a ½ gallon of strawberries & cream……..

  9. Happy Birthday Russel! Ahhh, Blue Bell…..The “creamery” is always nice to visit…They give tours and free samples of your choice! :) Yummy. I understand that you can order the ice cream online and it can be shipped….;)
