Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park opens on March 16

Butterfly Jungle, one of my favorite events in San Diego County, opens on March 16 at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park near Escondido, California.

Butterfly Jungle is one of the most popular events at the Safari Park, so I suggest going early (I’ll be there on opening day), and going early in the day (I’ll be there at 9:00 a.m.). Because it’s so popular, even early in the morning, they allow only a certain number of people in at a time so that any butterflies on the ground aren’t crunched to death by billions and billions and billions of feet. Amazingly (perhaps, or not), the smallest feet usually do the most damage to our littler flying friends. For more information, visit online at San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park.
Meanwhile, to whet your appetite, here are some pictures from past Butterfly Jungles:

Aren’t they beautiful? Sri Lanka used to be renowned for its butterflies – one could sometimes see swarms of them in the season – but these days, just the last 10 or 15 years – they’re becoming more rare, reflecting of the increased use of insecticides.
We don’t have many butterflies at all here in the desert, which is one reason why Butterfly Jungle is so popular.
Fantastic photos. You live in such an interesting place – wanna do a houseswap?
I think I could do that for a month or two!
what an amazing variety of butterflies! seeing that would soften the hardest of hearts, one would think! i that blue morpho is a classic; in Costa Rica, I would sit and watch the morphos ride the cool air currents along a quiet little stream where I lived.
i look forward to your post!

It’s one of the extraordinary of human experiences to enter a Butterfly House and be among these marvelous creatures. Have been to a few and we have one at our local nature center, albeit small. I’m sure that your next visit will be as memorable as the previous. Thanks for a burst of Spring colors.
they are so delicately beautiful.. nice post russel, thanks for sharing
Really remarkable!
They are fantastic. I’ve been in a butterfly jungle last year and you brought me back today. Thanks! What’s about Zoeyy, doesn’t she like butterflies
She’s just tired from chasing them!………lol
What great photos! The first butterfly is my favorite.
As always, your pictures are amazing. I once went to a butterfly sanctuary in Costa Rica. So beautiful.
one nicer than the other, thanx for the share
Fantastic photos.
Perfect; we’re going out to San Diego the week the Butterfly critters appear! Will make it a point to see the exhibit at the SD Zoo. Thanks for the info.
Note that the butterflies are actually at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It used to be called the Wild Animal Park but since it is owned by the Zoological Society, they changed names in order to bring more recognition to it. Unfortunately, all “San Diego Zoo Safari Park” does is confuse it with the San Diego Zoo, which is located in Balboa Park in downtown San Diego. The Zoo and Safari Park are about 45 miles from each other.
Stunning butterflies!
Terrific photos! Thanks for the mini tour. Maybe I’ll make the trip to see it next year.
Thanks for telling us about the butterfly “jungle”. Your photos make it look like a real treat.
WOW These are awesome! I’ve been waiting for someone to do a butterfly post! Really amazing Russel

Each one is beautiful it it’s own way!
You certainly do the butterflies’ graceful colors justice with your camera…
We have (or had?) a butterfly event here in Indianapolis that I attended a few years ago. It was wonderful! The butterflies were so pretty and so friendly. Lovely photos!
Your photos combine great beauty with technical precision. Wonderful!
Hi Russel. Wonderful photos of such gentle beautiful butterflies. Thank you for liking my poems ‘ Last Journey, Empty Carriage, Mortuary and My Thoughts’. You are so kind. Best Wishes, The Foureyed Poet.
