Alright, alright. Not everything that’s white is snow………

That’s actually mountains of salt at the South Bay Salt Works.

The South Bay Salt Works are just down the road from the imploded South Bay Power Plant.

After the implosion I walked about eight miles exploring the South Bay.

The power plant was demolished because the city of Chula Vista wants to build parks, hotels, restaurants, etc., on its waterfront rather than ugly power plants and ugly salt plants and salt ponds. Ugh.

Eventually the South Bay Salt Works will be demolished, too, and the salt ponds returned to the natural marsh that it once was.

Here are some more pictures of the South Bay Salt Works:

  1. I can’t help but marvel at the ingenuity and stark practicality of the salt plant machinery. And the powerful corrosive effect of the salt on the metal. Cool. -Nikki

  2. That’s really interesting…. I was thinking it might be sand. I doubt that salt would have ever occurred to me… Love the pictures! I like old machinery, cars, buildings etc. shots… I guess you could say I just like old stuff…LOL

  3. Thank you for sharing! I grew up in Coronado then later in Chula VIsta. I remember going to the South Bay Drive-In which was down by the mountains of salt! :)
    Thanks for the memories!
    Peacea nd Love~ Christine

  4. I’m fascinated by this… I’ve read about salt, it’s hard to imagine mountains of it. I enjoyed looking at your photos. :) )) Granny Gee/Gloria

  5. love the beauty of the second last photo

  6. Always something intriguing from you, Russell. Didn’t think it was going to be salt though, thought it would be hills covered with white blossom. There you are you had me fooled again.

    Kind regards
    Corinne

  7. Ohh they’re so giant oO and all salt, so raw and cool.

  8. The first 2 pics are really great… they make you appreciate the size of the structure :)

  9. You’d need a big marguerite for all that salt. :-)

  10. I grew up near a salt mine in New York State. I appreciate this so much. It is truly amazing.
