Countdown to my first live implosion!
![]()
Tomorrow at 7:00 a.m., I get to see my first live implosion when the South Bay Power Plant, decommissioned several years ago, bites the dust.

I’ll be there taking a video, which means that I’ll have to catch the San Diego Trolley about 5:30 a.m. to get there on time. They are expecting many thousands of people so there’s no way I’m driving down there and trying to find a parking spot.

Sad to hear about the building – but I’m sure it will be an impressive sight!
There’s not much you can do with an obsolete power plant, especially when it was built decades ago on a prime piece of oceanfront real estate.
I remember when the Kingdome came down in Seattle.
That should be WAY cool. Like your previous commenter, I remember the Kingdome Implosion, and I regret not seeing it live–it was cool on TV. I think you’re in for a rare experience. Have fun, and try to avoid the blast (suck?) radius!
I’m curious, looking forward to it
Exciting! Do you have to wear dust masks?
No because we’re only allowed to get so close. I think the implosion perimeter is 1000 feet.
I didn’t know that San Diego had trollies. Very nice.
Along with the weather, my favorite reason for living here is because of all the trains — San Diego Trolley, Sprinter, Metrolink, Coaster, and Amtrak.
I almost dated a boy once who did implosions – but that was the most interesting thing about him to me – I am sure he is happily married with grandchildren now – why did I choose to share this with you–I don’t know
Implosions are impressive though
lol
I almost imploded after dating a couple of people. One woman had just been born again and was having daily conversations with God, or her version of God. Her God was telling her when to call or come see me, when to take sick leave even if she wasn’t sick, when to take vacation, where to go on vacation. S/he was even telling her when to take the dogs for a walk with me. I gave up after six weeks.
you hung in there longer than most
I was working for a place that rebuilt and it’s older version was being imploded. I watched from across the street a ways. Awesome sight (to use and overused word).
That building was a power – gas and electric – company that I worked for, and continued to for a total of 25 years, until downsizing imploded my job! I went on to enter college at the age of 47 and graduated to become a teacher at age 51. All implosions for a reason.
I hope you had fun. I’m sure you got some impressive shots.
Lol…Zoey the Cool cat! Love it! Great pictures and I must admit, I’ve never seen an implosion!
Boomdee will come back to see the boom
That’s a lot of concrete and steel. Do you know what they’re going to do with that site?
Chula Vista wants to build a convention center there.
Thanks. It looks like a beautiful site near the water. Enjoy the implosion! Amazing how far we’ve come with building and tearing down.
So how did it go!?
Stay tuned for my next blog post, coming up soon.
I’ll keep an eye out.
I hope you will post the video!
