Music on Mondays — We are the world
![]()
On this date in 1985, quite a few famous recording artists got together to record “We Are The World.” With the political divisiveness in the United States, the basic problems of life that still exist worldwide, the nightclub fire in Brazil that claimed over 200 lives, the globalization of the world’s economies, the 24/7 worldwide news cycle due to the Internet……. on and on……… maybe it’s time to remember that we are the world. Emphasis on WE!

“We Are The World” was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie. It was released as a single on March 7, 1985, and went on to sell an estimated 20 million copies worldwide, making it the best selling single in the history of pop music.
The 52-person band and singers included the five Jacksons, Lionel Ritchie, Steve Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Bette Midler, Dan Aykroyd, Harry Belafonte, and many others. It’s fun to watch the video and try to identify everyone.

I bought this song on vinyl
Maybe it’s time to re-release We Are The World with a new updated twist? People, like me, are so jaded it all just seems contrived. For me it’s because it seems nothing ever really changes.
Nothing ever really does change because the world is run by the desire for money and power, and that will never change.
Sadly you’re right. All we can do is make our little corner peaceful and loving and let the world do what it will.
One of the best songs from the 80′s! Best video too!
Am reading the Autobiography of John Taylor from Duran Duran and have just read the part about the making if the Band Aid song which preceded this and the Live Aid Concert I can’t help wondering how many of the new ‘stars’ would be as generous with their time and how many would issue ridiculous lists of demands to be part of it
Oldie but goodie!
Loved the song! Thank you for sharing
Was that in 85 that long ago. I remember waiting to see it on TV when it was released.
I haven’t thought of that song in years! Where did the years go? Thanks for the reminder.
Though some singer may longer existence but they are the true evergreen!
Thanks I love this!
Thank you, dear friend!!! I remember this as if it were yesterday. We still continue…
We saw the coolest documentary on HBO about Harry Belafonte. He was known for his activism over the years and he played a part in getting these folks together. He is a true hero who knew people like Martin Luther King (he actually quieted some of mob in Mississippi by bringing white singers into sing and march alongside). This was during the Mississippi burning time. He also knew Nelson Mandela and aided his efforts. I had no idea of his reach and non-musical reputation. Thanks for sharing this. BTG
One of my most loved songs of all time. Hugs
