The new year’s first warm cloudless day

I was up the entire night last night watching Novak Djokovik and Stan Wawrinka play an awesome five-set match at the Australian Open Tennis Championships. Djokovik won 1-6 7-5 6-4 6-7(5) 12-10. I think it was around 6:00 a.m. my time when the match finally ended.
Apparently I was so tired that I didn’t hear Zoey the Cool Cat trying to wake me up to play fetch with her red ring so she got a little upset, jumped on the dining room table (where she knows she’s not allowed), and proceeded to knock a glass bottle onto the floor. Broken glass everywhere. However, I was wide awake after just an hour’s sleep.
After cleaning up the broken glass, I decided to punish the Cool Cat by taking off and leaving her at home. Here she is in the office window staring at me as I was leaving:

The expression on her face tells you she’s not exactly happy about me taking off.
I went out to the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge where, after all the recent rains, I found a vernal pool that is not on any of my vernal pool lists:

As I came to the historic Sweetwater River Bridge, built in 1929, I found a motorcycle club taking pictures of their bikes:

Every single owner had a smarty pants phone, and they all were trying to take pictures. After watching them for a minute or so, I asked them if they would like to give all their phones to me, go get on their bikes, and I would take a group picture with each of their phones. That’s what I did.
Later on I discovered a new trail that I had not been on before. However, someone else was using it:

The guy was still sleeping. I looked in my wallet and found that all I had was a ten dollar bill. I put it just inside the “doorway” at the right and placed a rock on top of it so it wouldn’t blow away. I hope I brought a little happiness to someone today.
I spent about six hours wandering around the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. I also found out that the Refuge was expanded from 9,200 acres to over 11,000 acres over the Christmas holidays. When I got home, look who was waiting for me in the office window. What a welcome!

After eating and taking a shower, I headed out to Sunset Cliffs to watch the sunset. Today was the first cloudless warm day of the new year so I thought there was a good chance to see the green flash. For those of you who don’t know about the green flash, see Wikipedia.
Although I did see the green flash, it wasn’t a strong one so it didn’t make a good picture. Here are three pictures that I did get at Sunset Cliffs:

What a great day (if you’re not ZTCC) and kicked off with that incredible tennis match.
I think the expression on Zoey’s face was “how dare you blame me for something that wouldn’t have happen if you just had played tennis with me.” She didn’t forget on the second picture
Lovely group of photos….
what a fabulous post, Zoey is a little star
Ceri
And more tennis tonight?
Yep. But it was the women’s night, and they only play best of three instead of best of five so they don’t go all night. I think the latest they ended was about 2:00 a.m. my time.
Russel, love the shot of Sunset and The Birds and Sunset Cliffs…
Great post. Nice touch leaving the money. I saw the green flash last year for the first time off Saint Malo in northern France. Cool Zoey before and after.
What a delightful post … Love those sunset shots.
Poor Zoey! Not surprised she was cross! Love this series of photos from the homeless home to the stunning sunset.
I don’t understand why Zoey was upset: do you usually take her with you when you go out? If not your leaving was just like any other day that you leave.
I mostly work at home and Zoey the Cool Cat is quite possibly the most possessive and sociable cat I’ve ever met. Prior to getting ZCC, I had always thought cats were kind of aloof and antisocial until it was time for them to eat. ZCC, though, follows me all around the house. While ZCC is asleep, I can go into another room and within a minute, she’s woken up, stretched, and followed me to the new location. So when I do leave the house, she’s none too happy.
Lovely photos, and I feel for poor Zoey… Having had several Cats myself they make you very aware they are cross with you

You are lucky to have a cloudless day, I can give you 6 inches of our snow if you like
Take care and enjoy the warmth….
I love snow! (as long as I can go visit it for an hour and then go back home…….lol)
Busy day!
Beautiful story. I love that you took the time to take the pictures for the bikers and that you helped a homeless person (so sad). You had a wonderful day! And then your loyal pet was still waiting by the screen. Love it all. Pets are so amazing.
great shot of 33′s…:) were you at Bird (ess) rock?
I was out at Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach. What are 33′s?
Zoey is one controlling kitty! HAHA! Great pictures
I always go on a great adventure when I visit your site
Poor Zoey! As if it was her fault! It was an accident lol
I think you were very mean to her
Great photos though
Oh, it was her fault all right. With Zoey the Cool Cat, there is no such thing as an accident. She’s a very purposeful cat………lol
You’re a great human being… Giving $10 without even talking to the guy… I have so much respect for you sir
Poor Zoey, I hope there was lots of cuddles after the gorgeous sunset. Thank you for being kind and thoughtful to a stranger, that warms my heart.
I liked this post much more than some of them. I have no idea why., Something must have struck a cord with me. Maybe it was more pics of Zoey and the kindness that you showed to a homeless peson. Also more words from you was nice.
Really great post! Love the photos, but I have to say the “Cool Cat” ones are classic. Aren’t animals the funniest sometimes. So smart and yet act so innocent. Just found out about the Green Flash the other day, maybe I will get to see it some time. Peace and love,
Tammy
You are a good and charitable man.
