The Rock Haus in Del Mar, California
The drive along the coast on Highway 101, also known as Pacific Coast Highway, is rarely disappointing. It becomes even more interesting if one takes a few detours into the cities along the coast. One such city that is always fun to explore is Del Mar. Just behind Del Mar Plaza is the Rock Haus at 410 15th Street:
Del Mar is kind of a sleepy, upper class city, except for twice a year with the San Diego County Fair (the fifth largest fair in America) and the Del Mar Thoroughbred races. Thus the sign seems a little out of place, especially since it was at the entrance to a residential neighborhood at the edge of downtown Del Mar. The house itself was interesting yet appeared to be lacking in maintenance.
According to public records, the Rock Haus is a bed & breakfast inn. It was built in 1920, has 4,882 square feet, and was most recently sold in February 1997 for $1.5 million. Maybe the lack of maintenance and the fact that the place was closed indicates that it is being renovated. I’ll have to check it out each time I’m in Del Mar.
