Rain — This is not the San Diego that I’ve come to know and love

This is the third consecutive day that it’s been raining here. This IS NOT the San Diego that I’ve come to know and love.
Yesterday I had to drive 90 miles round trip in the rain to have Christmas supper with my mother-in-law and her boyfriend. Jim and I decided to take it kind of slow so we hit a few of the side streets to see what Christmas decorations there might be. One of the places we stopped was Carlsbad Village. It was there that I got an unexpected surprise:

That’s the historic Carlsbad Depot built by the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad in 1887. It was Carlsbad’s first commercial building and also housed the telegraph office, a Wells Fargo bank, a United States Post Office, and the general store. The last passenger train stopped in 1957, and the depot was closed in 1960. The depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 30, 1993.
As I was standing there, an Amtrak train zoomed by, obviously at its maximum speed which I believe is 79 mph right there. The sound was loud and the wind rush felt like a hurricane. Interestingly, the Depot is used as the Carlsbad Visitor Center but there is no fence or anything between the Depot entrance and the tracks. I’m thinking that a visitor might be quite surprised by the unexpected Amtrak train zooming by, and I certainly hope the visitor doesn’t have a child running around loose. I see an accident waiting to happen.
I’ll be visiting again, when I have more time, to get some pictures of trains on the tracks next to the Depot. All I got yesterday was this one of the rear end of the southbound Amtrak train:

I love Carlsbad!
If it were a little closer to me, I could fall in love with it, too!
Look forward to more photos of the depot. The lack of fence is rather scary!
Hi Russel,
Btw, I wish we had some rain here. I wouldn’t mind at all if I had to drive around in rain for weeks.
And what about “It never rains in Southern California”?
Take care, and have a great weekend,
Pit
Come up to the Seattle area & you will think your 3 day rainy stint is nothing! It’s all in perspective!
Every time I go to Seattle it’s bright and sunshiny! Not yet has it rained on me up there……..lol
Shhhh…………..we never tell anyone the sun shines up here!
Too late! I’ve told millions of people!………..lol
Drat!
Forgive me but as I read your title I thought “Good!” Not very sympathetic am I? Lol. Our persistent rain turned to snow for a time today. Wishing I had your sun.
I have nominated you for an award! Check it out here! http://carlasueeatsweet.wordpress.com/2012/12/16/super-sweet-blogging-award/
Thank you, Carla!
A great interesting blog, love its history you describe.

when I lived in Laguna, we used to drive down to the Carlsbad raceway and eff around. Good memories. Great pictures as usual, Russell…and here’s to a dry day in Cally! (although: “not”—comes to mind when I look out yon window…)
Hard to believe it’s already been eight years since the Carlsbad Raceway closed. ‘Twas a lot more fun than the Raceway Corporate Center that is there now.
corporate being the key word here…
It’s been raining here nonstop for days too
I can’t remember what sun looks like!
