By taking the back roads and the dirt roads beyond the boondocks, one can get quite close to a whole ‘nother country. It’s just behind the fence.

I have no idea what this sign means:

Otay Mesa Inspection Facility

I did a lot of Google searches and the only thing that I could come up with is that Vail’s Gate is the name of this entrance to the Otay Mesa Inspection Facility, in use from 1994 to 2004, and Rhino Crossing is the type of gate. I came to that conclusion because I know that entrances to secure facilities often have names, and Rhino is the manufacturer of security fences. If anyone else has a better idea, let us know.

wow. I recall as a young girl wading through the Rio Grande river in Big Bend, playfully running back and forth from Texas to Mexico. I wonder what that border looks like now???

Thanks for continuing to visit. I didn’t see any traces of Zooey around the nishkigoi pond. I have a feeling she’s been doing her Christmas shopping, cracking the whip on Santa’s elves, riding herd on the reindeer and drinking hot cocoa spiked with creme de- cacoa or my favorite holiday extravaganza – hot cider with sake. Give her a rub for me.

hello, sir Russel… love the set of photos, they showcase the mesa, the open space, the vastness, if i might say… :) laughed about the line re: one side, US, the other, another country entirely, haha. years ago, i saw two comedy movies (hollywood) making fun of the same. for some reason, i always find it funny. you take lovely pics. warm regards… :)
