Bad dogs, Lance Armstrong, and Republicans for Rape

Dog in carI’m a firm believer in bad dogs being the result of bad owners. However, at the same time I do wonder why all the dogs biting and killing small children are reportedly pitbulls. Here in San Diego we seem to have a pitbull attack every other month. No other type of dog. Always pitbulls. The only instance I have ever read of another type of dog biting and killing someone occurred in January 2001 in San Francisco when two Presa Canarios killed Diane Whipple. Diane and the owners of the two dogs had a history of confrontation with each other while living in the same building. Diane’s dead and the two dog owners are in prison for life, one for life.

Russel Ray's bikeWhen evidence came out that Joe Paterno, long-time football coach at Pennsylvania State University, helped over up the various instances of child abuse by Jerry Sandusky over about thirteen years, I couldn’t understand how people would still rush to defend Paterno. I had a similar circumstance with Lance Armstrong. I found it hard not to support Lance because of all the good he had done, just like Paterno, over the years. After reading the 202-page USADA report on Lance Armstrong, I am no longer a fan. I don’t wish him ill will or anything, I’m just sad and moving on.

How could any woman in her right mind vote for a Republican? The recent remarks from them in apparent support of rape are not the first. These remarks go back at least to mid-1990. If six people are actually saying it, you can be assured that hundreds or thousands more Republicans in Red States are thinking it! Women? Wake up!

  1. Clayton Williams: “If it’s inevitable, just relax and enjoy it” – 1990 Texas Governor’s race
  2. Ken Buck: “A jury could very well conclude that this is a case of buyer’s remorse … It appears to me … you invited him over… the appearance is of consent.” – October 2010
  3. Rick Santorum: “Rape victims should make the best of a bad situation.” – January 2012
  4. Chuck Winder: “I would hope that when a woman goes in to a physician with a rape issue, that physician will indeed ask her about perhaps her marriage, was this pregnancy caused by normal relations in a marriage or was it truly caused by a rape.” – March 2012
  5. Todd Akin: “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways of shutting that whole thing down” – August 2012 Missouri Senate race
  6. Richard Mourdock: “I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.” – October 2012 Indiana Senate race

  1. I think the trouble with pitbulls is that the people who own them train them to be violent., I know several pit bulls in loving homes who are complete softies.
getting back to republicans – regrettably – Dohn at earthstonestation has a brilliant piece about republicans and the environment, which has me praying for an Obama win with much more fervour than before.

    • It’s not the violent pitbulls trained for fighting that bite and kill children, though. It’s the ones “that never hurt a flea.” It’s like they are great pets and then one day they just snap.

  2. Things like this can be sad, heartbreaking, and give you that “Why would they do that? Why would they think that?” kind of feeling. Certainly something that’s difficult to bring up, at least for me.

  3. Sadly, that comment the other day is not the only outrageous thing Mourdock has said in this campaign. Even worse, it likely won’t make a difference in the election. I am embarrassed that this man will likely be my next Senator. His primary race against Dick Lugar, who has served admirably in the Senate for years, was dispicable. I received numerous requests from my R friends to crossover and vote in the R primary last Spring.(I did not; I think that is wrong & I didn’t want to be on the rosters as a Republican until the next primary!) There is no way that this race should be as close as it is, but I have little confidence that Mourdock will lose.

The Armstrong thing makes me sad too. I’m over following cycling.

    • I have been a registered Republican since my first election back in 1976. However, since 1994, I’ve voted Democratic about 99% of the time. I’ve stayed a registered Republican in order to try to initiate change in the Republican Party from within. After all, a registered Democrat is not going to change the Republican Party. Unfortunately, the Republican Party has been taken over my religious extremist fanatics who don’t even know basic science. After this election, I’m changing to either an Independent or a Democrat.

  4. There is a plethora of bully-type breeds from which potential owners can choose. This class of dogs has been hugely popular over the last decade (or two) as can be seen at county shelters, rescue groups, tv shows geared to dog lovers, newspapers, and magazines. Because of the large number of breeds that have a pitt-bull type appearance and the general public’s lack of ability to properly identify a pitt bull, any dog with a muscular build and square or angular jaw is often mistakenly reported to be a pitt bull. Add in the fact that pit bulls are plentiful due to their popularity, and it stands to reason that there would be a disproportionate increase in the number of reported attacks or bites attributed to this breed. In addition, the media enjoys capitalizing on the public’s fear of pitt bulls because it helps sell their stories and increases their viewership and or readers. This situation has decimated this generally peaceful breed and all the other breeds who have the misfortune of looking similar to a pitt bull. It is not pitt bulls or breeds that resemble them that are the problem; it is the people who own them, the media, lack of knowledge, stereo typing, and prejudice that are the problem. This same set of circumstances has decimated popular breeds in the past such as rotties, doberman pinchers, german shepherds, even poodles. Basically any hugely popular breed can be victim to this molotov cocktail. Its humans and prejudice that are the problems and always the dogs who pay the price with their lives. You may want to do more research on the subject so that you can present a balanced view and not unintentionally contribute to the public’s misunderstanding of this breed, because that’s not your intent or style.

    • While I appreciate your comment, I have done my research, and I pay attention to the news.

I know there are other dogs that bite and kill. That’s why I started off my post with the disclaimer that I’m a firm believer in bad dogs being the result of bad owners. However, it doesn’t matter where I look, or in what part of the country, pit bulls are in every story except the one I mentioned. Considering that I rarely see pit bulls when I’m out and about, and I’m out and about quite often, I think there’s something else going on.

I’m not exactly a know-nothing-about-dogs person either. I have had many dogs in my life, most of them mutts from the shelters, but also a purebred Welsh Corgi, two purebred Beagles, two purebred Shelties, a purebred Golden Labrador Retriever, a purebred Chow Chow, and a Rottweiler/Shepherd mutt.

It also doesn’t appear to be my imagination since pit bulls regularly rank at the top of all of the dangerous dog and dogbite lists. No, there’s something else going on. Maybe dangerousdogs.net says it best:

“Pit bull is one of the most brave and dauntless dogs that usually takes on any opponent. Therefore they take part in dog fighting. It is common knowledge that this dog breed can even mangle the human to death as pit bull locks its jaws onto the booty until it is dead.”

      Some references: dogsbite.org, dangerousdogs.net, prweb.com, thedailybeast.com, petsdo.com.

      • DangerousDogs.net’s name says it all. It is not an unbiased resource. Dog bite statistics are often inaccurately reported since reporting is provided by animal control and medical personnel who rely on verbal reports from dog bite recipients. The average person can accurately identify less than a dozen dog breeds from all the breeds available in this country. As I said before, any dog with a muscular build and angular jaw is often deemed a pit bull, and therein lies the problem. Identifying a pit bull from the a large variety of bully breeds that somewhat resemble each other is no easy task, even for experienced dog owners. Take this test and see for yourself. Can you identify the pit bull on the first try? http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html. I have helped rescue, care for, and rehome thousands of dogs over the past decade and I can tell you with much more accuracy than one whom has interacted closely with only 6-8 dogs in their lifetime that pit bulls are no more dangerous and have no more propensity to bite than any other breed.

        • However, here in California, and in many other states where I have lived and worked, any dog that bites someone, and especially dogs that kill someone, are quarantined for usually 30 days. If a lawsuit results, the dog can be quarantined indefinitely untiil the lawsuit is resolved. Most often the dog is put down.

When the authorities get involved, and that includes veterinatirans, it’s not that difficult to determine the breed of dog.

I’m not a vet, nor a law enforcement officer, so I have no need to take your pit bull test.

I love dogs. Always have. I still wonder, though, why all of the bites and deaths due to dogs here in San Diego are always pit bulls. You can’t answer that.

There are a lot of reports about pit bulls being more dangerous and having a propensity to bite than other breeds simply because they have been bred to fight and kill.

          • I did answer your question. Regarding your decision not to take the breed test, are you concerned that you might choose the wrong breed? I took the test and I picked the wrong breed several times. Mistakes in breed identification are made, and as a result, bite statistics are skewed. On the link you cited that listed the bite statistics, who collected the data? What was their training? What method was used? How did the data collectors ensure the accuracy of their reporting? When people use generalizations like “always” and “never” it weakens their case. And speaking of veterinarians, their expertise is in the field of medical care, not animal behavior or breed identification. My own veterinarian mis-identified my black and tan puppy as a Rottie on our first visit. She is a blanket black and tan German Shepherd Dog. The only thing she has in common with a Rottie is the color of her coat and location of tan markings.

            • This isn’t about me. I left school and tests about 40 years ago.

I’m just telling you what happens here in San Diego, and the reports on the radio, internet, newspaper, and television “always” are about pitbulls biting and killing, never any other breed. It is what it is.

I understand your desire to defend them. I lean that way, too. However, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I’ll believe the authorities. And when a dog owner says, “My pitbull has always been great around children,” I’ll going to go out on that same limb and believe that the dog owner knows what kind of dog s/he has.

            • For readers who might be interested, Wikipedia has an extensive listing under “Breed-specific legislation.” Here’s the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breed-specific_legislation

I think it is telling that cities, states, and countries throughout the world, including the United States, have banned pit bulls, restricted their ownership, require them to be microchipped, require them to be spayed or neutered, and various other requirements.

Note also that Wikipedia and legislation, and me, use “pit bulls” to refer to any of several “pit bull-type” dogs, including American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and American Bulldog. Some jurisdictions use breed names as defined by the United Kennel Club or American Kennel Club.

  5. OMG!! and I thought only here politicians gave idiotic views on rape. Sample these-
women invite rape when they wear Jeans/T-shirt(read-western clothes); The marriageable age for girls should be reduced to 15 to avoid them getting raped; when guys eat western food, their blood gets hot and they rape, so its the food to be blamed; and many more. SICK!!!

  6. Spot on! I did not vote republican.

  7. I’ve voted republican before…many times…and yes, I’m a woman…witness gravatar…but you can BET I’m not this time…The republicans seem to have lost their minds…………..I’m afraid too many young women in this country are so busy following the “inspiring” lives of the Kardashian’s to pay attention…..sickening.

  8. Well said, Russel. These must be women who were raised to think very poorly of themselves and their gender, and are seeking only approval by men, their so-called superiors, instead of equality. Ann Romney was sickening when she said she couldn’t imagine a woman claiming to be better at a man at any job, and no man would want to marry a woman like that. Is that what she wants for women everywhere? Subservience? That’s not what the suffragettes suffered for. It’s not what women and their supporters marched for. Why would we surrender the power and position we have worked so hard for over the last hundred years? Obama was talking to women as well as men when he said it’s time to move forward, and I’m right behind him!

    • I remember a couple of decades ago when I was still living in Texas and the Southern Baptist Convention reaffirmed that women belonged in the home, subservient to their husbands, not out in the world working. That’s when I came to the conclusion that religions are mostly an excercise in mind control, power, and greed. Sadly, so many women seem to be of that mindset, especially in the South and Midwest.

  9. Good golly – I cannot believe the talk about rape. Horrifying.
Re pitbulls, I think you’ll find it has something to do with the people who own them and the way they bring those particular dogs up. If they got a pittie because they liked the idea of a vicious dog, then that it will be. If, like a gazillion others, they got the dog because they are great dogs, they’ll be the ones who never appear in the news.

    • I’d like to believe that. I really would. However, here in San Diego it just doesn’t appear that way. The dogs that make the news are always the “great dogs,” the “love dogs,” the “we’ve had him for ten years and he’s never been a problem” dogs. And they always are pit bulls. I wish I was making this stuff up, but no.

  10. Hi Russel, I like your points, however, I wish you would have included a link for the 202 page report on the conviction of Lance Armstong by USADA. By the way it’s interesting that the report is 202 pages long, which is the area code for Washington D.C., #justsaying
Wow, those rape comments are so atrocious (extremely wicked, brutal, or cruel : barbaric. appalling, horrifying), that they sound like they were made by rapists, in denial of their actions!
I will pray for their souls!

  11. Man, you got my blood pressure up with this post. It seems there is no longer honor is sports, the Republicans cause spikes in my blood pressure just thinking about them. (I’m Canadian so not even directly involved in your election), and it’s not only dogs killing – now it’s teenage boys killing 10 and 12 year old girls. Makes me want to bury my head in the sand.

  12. Doesn’t it make you wonder why these men actually are married? Why would a woman live with someone like that, unless she buys into the “you’re less than I am” theory. My votes this year: Democrats and women.

  13. We are hold our breath for you in Canada! It is frightening to hear the comments on rape!

  14. I agree it’s the owner, although maybe pitbulls are by nature an aggressive/hunter type? Like all the border collies I’ve ever owned really loved to herd and organize things, even this I never took them out sheepherding. With Republicants, they are just too disgusting. Too disgusting. When one of those men gets raped and pregnant, they can have an opinion. Otherwise, they need to STFU about my reproductive rights. No one tells me what to do with my body. No man, no state, no government. yes, I’m very passionate about that!!

    • There is a lot of evidence and research indicating that pit bulls are by nature an aggressive/hunter type. It’s kind of like people who want to keep, say, a tiger as a pet. One can do it, but one has to be wary that one day nature will intervene and the tiger will revert to being a wild animal, if just for a split second. However, that split second is all it takes. Same thing with pit bulls. They are an aggressive breed, and while they also are a domesticated breed, it just takes that one split second.

  15. I lived in north west Iowa where they are extremely conservative, and in the four years I was there… the only issue they were concerned about was abortion. Farmers, barns, fields had signs warning about the evils of abortion. The world could blow up in their face and they would be surprised. It is VERY disturbing.

  16. I don’t understand how any woman can vote Republican, either, yet so many of them plan to do just that. I know a woman who is so hopped-up mad about illegal aliens getting government money, she can’t see any of the other issues. Another says stupid things like, “my business is better when Republicans are in the White House.” I think they’re in denial. They only see what they want to see, and it appears to be all about money. But then, maybe there is something else going on. Sure there’s a sisterhood, but women have always been competitive with each other, and they don’t always come to each other’s assistance. There’s a lot of jealousy and rivalry that women don’t like to admit. I suspect that has something to do with it, even if subconsciously. “If a woman is wearing the wrong clothes, she’s asking for it,” is not something only men think. Women can be wicked behind each other’s backs. I’m not talking ALL women here, just to be clear.

  17. Saddened and disappointed with the whole Lance issue too.
And agree with Carol about those Republicans you have quoted…can’t imagine having to live with them! They sound like the Taliban they went after for God’s sake!

  18. You better believe I will be voting! Sincerely, one awake woman

  19. Nice debate between you and afternoonartist. I’m not good at that but enjoy a good one.
All of the points in this post are on-target. You have presented them well.

  20. I England as well, it seems that most of the attacks on people are from banned breeds such as pitbulls. Personally I think it’s something in their genetic makeup and will always be lurking there somewhere. It would be better to not allow these type of dogs to breed as all until the entire species were extinct, which may sound cruel but I cannot bear that hundreds of these dogs are being put to sleep because of their breed, especially when they did not ask to be born in the first place. So sad :(

  21. I think there are plenty of women that just say they support Romney, perhaps because they want to be seen in a particular way (they would use words like Christian and moral), but when they go into a voting booth, no one will be looking over their shoulder and believe me, they don’t want to risk having their birth control pills taken away from them either. And they absolutely believe they should be paid the same as the men they work with for doing the same job.

  22. I just read your article on Bad dogs, Lance Armstrong, and Republicans for Rape « Russel Ray Photos and want to thank you for it.
