There’s more to see at the San Diego Zoo than just animals!
The San Diego Zoo is both a world-class zoo and a world-class botanical garden, and right now is a great time to go see the giant hibiscus that are blooming.
Giant hibiscus can get flowers up to eighteen inches in diameter although the more common size is a mere eight to twelve inches, about the size of your dinner plates.
Most of the giant hibiscus at the Zoo are in front of and to the sides of Flamingo Lagoon.
Here are some that were blooming on my visit yesterday:

I enjoyed the photos of the beautiful flowers but loved the cat paws even more.
Looks like those cat claws on those cat paws might need a little clipping!…………..lol
You do such a beautiful job of photographing flowers. Lovely
Thanks, LuAnn!
Gorgeous.
Beautiful flowers, Russell. Cool topic.
Wow, the flowers are amazing! they remind me of daylilies! did you know that hibiscus (and daylilies) are edible? yum yum, those would make a beautiful salad! z
Only the flower petals, though. Same thing with Nasturtiums. My wise old grandmother used to put Nasturtiums in her salads. I learned from her, but my friends always ask me what kind of lettuce comes in orange and yellow………..lol
I envy the fact that you have that fabulous zoo so close by! Lovely photos of the flowers Russel!
And you’re coming to visit when?………….lol
Is that an invitation?
Absolutely!
Spring time was my favorite time at the zoo in San Diego. I went every year for 5 years! If I can make it down I will be there…will give you ample notice! Thank you Russel! Hugs! –B
Wow these flowers are gorgeous!
I want a bouquet of plate-sized flowers!!! But a living one, so thank you for this Dubble R. Also agree with your one commenter up there; I love those kitty cat paws too. (must kiss)
The funny thing is that I have never seen giant hibiscus for sale in the plant nurseries. What gives, I wonder.
What beautiful photos.. those colours are magnificent…
Great!
Gorgeous!
love hibiscus, i’ve been planning the longest time to visit the nearby nursery to find one with deep red flowers.. now i’m reminded.. it is common in my country especially the yellow and red ones and we call it “gumamela” in our language.. nice photos russel..
Anyone ever owned by a cat can relate to Zoey’s paws in the last picture of this post.
Tee! Hee!…
I refuse to be owned by a cat……………….
Ouch! Quit biting me! I didn’t mean it……………
Darn cats……………..
lol
Oh my goddd. Your cat is so funny! I just crawled through a few of your posts to see the cat photos. Now I’m taking photos of my cat approving of the shoes I just posted about! Hahah shoes approved by Psyche the cool cat.
It’s fun to get something new and see how cats immediately find it. Doesn’t matter where you put it. They have a sense that there’s something new in the house, and they go on a mission to find it, make it their own, approve it……….lol
Photos great as always. Whatever you learned about snapping red flowers worked! But my favorite was the Cool Cat photo at the very end!
Lovely hibiscus flowers. I used to have lots of hibiscus around my house in India. Thanks for bringing back those memories to me…!! And thanks for following my blog (which is little inactive currently) but you’ve implanted a thought in me to get back to my writing. Thanks!!
The flowers are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. And I like Zoe’s paw picture.
Terrific photos from flowers. I enjoyed very much seeing them.
Your blog is great – thank you for all of your visits to art rat cafe…

I love Hibiscus, I have two in my garden. Beautiful flowers and paws
My goodness, those are amazing photos of the different hibiscus. So gorgeous.
