Zoey the Cool Cat to inherit millions!

A Piece Missing

Zoey the Cool CatI’m pretty sure most of my readers know that I have a cat. Her name is Zoey the Cool Cat. I’m pretty sure that most of my readers also know that I really do like my cat. I don’t love her because I reserve love for people, not animals or inanimate objects. But I do really, really, really, really like her.

Zoey the Cool CatHowever, if something happens to me, I don’t have her in my will. Maybe I should? After all, others have put their pets in their wills:

  • Trouble, Leona Helmsley’s dog, inherited $12 million in 2007.
  • Tommasino, a stray cat in Italy, inherited $15 million in December 2011 from real estate mogul Maria Assunta.
  • Kalu, an Australian chimpanzee, inherited $60 million in 2010.
  • Gunter, a German shepherd, inherited $140 million in 2000.

Zoey the Cool CatI realize people are allowed to do with their money as they please, but I also wonder if there’s a piece missing in people who leave money like that to one pet rather than, say, founding a pet sanctuary for unwanted animals, or creating an endowment for a women and children’s abuse shelter…. or endowing a soup kitchen to feed the hungry…. or endowing a homeless shelter…. things that might actually improve the world and the lives of those in it.

Maybe if I had millions of dollars like, say, Mitt Romney, I might leave a few to Zoey the Cool Cat! Would the pet inheritance tax be more than what Romney pays in taxes each year? [Ooops. This last paragraph is sneaking into the realm of politics..............lol]

  1. This makes me cringe. Some peeps have NO clue.

  2. I agree with Zoey. What’s wrong with loving a cat? Why don’t you love her? she seems eminently loveable to me. Darwin said that animals have the same emotions as human beings – wouldn’t call them homo sapiens – so if she loves you, why don’t you love her?
Zoey feels this is fair comment.

  3. She looks sooooooo cute she deserves millions! Millions of fugs that is! Love is much more appreciated that money. :)

  4. Zoey is such a coool cat! I like her all the way from NZ! I can’t quite understand you do not love her!
As for the millions … well, it really is about those people and their sense of reality (or not).

    • It’s just my definition of love which I learned from my wise old grandmother. One day when my older brother destroyed my model airplane I was crying, “I loved that airplane! I loved that airplane!” No. Inanimate objects and animals that can’t talk to me don’t get love. They simply get lots of LIKES!

  5. Great points you have made there mate, I tell everyone I am leaving my inheritance to my goldfish, only because thats all that will be left , enough for a packet of fish food.

  6. Zoey is such a cool cat, she will have hands up to take care of her ‘in the event’. I say you don’t need to put animals in your will unless you’ve got AT LEAST a million.

  7. Hi,
Great article and great thoughts. This time you gave us all something to think about in words and not only in your wonderful pictures that you take.
I like animals too, and I liked my cat very much, but when it comes to leaving millions behind, I will leave them to establish something good that can help people.
    Ciao,
    Patricia

  8. If I had a million dollars to spare [ha ha] I’d open up an animal shelter right now, not wait until I was dead. Then again if you have multiple million dollars all that money probably feels like Monopoly money to you. Don’t you just wish they’d invite us all to play?

  9. I think it’s possible to love a cat, I love my cats as well as my humans. Plenty to go around. But here’s a thought, many people these days do make arrangements in their wills for the care of their pets should they predecease them. A friend, family member or pet rescue (as a last resort).

  10. I’m sure Zoey shows you with her actions that she loves you, just as your grandmother would if she couldn’t speak. Agree about the money issue, but not about love. It doesn’t have to be spoken to be shared. As the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words and sometimes wise-old grannies can be wrong!

  11. Hahaha…… love the reference to Mitt and his millions. Why not get a teensy bit political, once in a blue moon? :) Crazy to leave money to an animal, rather than a good cause. I agree that one should make sure that animal is well cared for in the event of one’s demise, but a few kibbles a day, and a new collar every year, doesn’t cost millions of dollars.

  12. I kind of agree with you, leaving money to an animal organization makes more sense to me than leaving money to an animal! P.S. Zoey obviously loves you, she’s saying so with her eyes. :)

  13. Money to people before animals I agree….I love animals but people are so much more valuable….

  14. Crazy stuff, after the pet passes away the money goes to the pet’s caretaker in anyway does it not? Imagine having millions and unable to find one worthy person to inherit it all.

    • You’re probably right about where the money goes. I guess what we don’t know is who inherited the pet! Maybe leaving money to a pet and then leaving the pet to someone is simply these people’s way of saying, “I love you but I love my pet more.”

  15. Just as long as Zoey knows that lots of kitty-kat can’t buy happiness!

  16. You can bet that Romney wont be leaving any money to the U. S. government who allowed him to amass it!

  17. I would leave my cat money, but only to be sure that she’ll be nutured well. RR, to like someone is sometimes enough to feel loved :)

  18. I really like your attitude to reserve your love for people.
Of course, pets are great and I liked mine as well, however, I cannot understand the craze some people have with their pets.
I dolizing them or even treating them like humans… that’s just too much for my taste.
Animals should be treated as animals in a responsible manner!^^

  19. Those are really great ideas for the money that some people obviously have no real idea what to do with. It seems to me that it is rather selfish of them to leave all that money to an animal that will never appreciate it. It would be better used to spread it around to the needy, whether it be human or animal or both. Thanks for the perspective.

  20. Russel, I shouldn’t worry – a cat with dental work as good as that will live forever.

  21. Another missing piece… I don’t think leaving money for your cat, or any animal, is really the issue. I think the important bit is – what will happen to your cat if you die? You don’t need money to make arrangements ahead of time for someone to take care of your cat. (just be sure that someone WANTS to do it!)

I have been working in an animal shelter, and all the time we see cats who come in because their owner died… sadly, these are often older cats, and difficult to adopt out. These cats become depressed (which might be an anthropomorphic comment, but they certainly appear depressed) and they just shut down. Maybe if they had a home to go to, they would be ok…. Happens to dogs too, but since we’re talking about cats…. there you go.
    :)
