Del Mar Dog Beach — Not a lookalike beach
Many of San Diego’s beaches don’t look like what you think of when you visualize a beach. Most people think of the long, flat expanses of sand and water…. Florida beaches come immediately to mind.
Yesterday’s Del Mar Surf Dog Surf-a-thon was held at Del Mar’s Dog Beach. (Many of our oceanside cities have special dog beaches where the dogs can run wild without leashes and play in the water. Surprisingly, there are few, if any, incidences of big dogs chowing down on little dogs…. or humans….)
Following are some pictures of Del Mar’s Dog Beach. They give you a good indication of what many of the beaches in the northern half of the county look like.

Oh, man, pretty, but too many people. I’m staying in Maine.
Ha! If you want to see too many people, you need to go to the beaches up in Los Angeles!…….lol
Thank you, I’ll pass. You could probably fit everybody in Maine on one of them. Although my mom did move out to that area recently, so I suppose I might have to at some point.
Although there are lots of people, it looks like a really fun place to spend time with your dogs.
Remember that they were having a dog surfing event, so the beach was about 100 times more crowded than it normally is.
Very interesting beach, not like I’d imagined. For your above reader, the Maine coast is amazing!
Oh, and I’m glad there’s a beach for dogs. It’s pretty fun watching them run and play in the surf!
Looks stunning and fabulous! So nice that they have beaches where the dogs can play off lead. In actual fact, off lead is usually the best for ensuring no dog fights. We are also lucky, here in South Africa, to have brilliant beaches and quite a few for dogs as well.
I so love that first shot. Wish I was there!
That’s my favorite, too. I usually put my favorite pictures as either the first or last. Here it’s the first.
That would be the most awesome setting for a portrait shoot. Do you shoot portraits?
I don’t. I actually try never to photograph people unless it’s in crowds. People are too finicky………lol
Ha, ha! That they are but I am addicted to the results. I’m sure that many a portrait photographer in your area must take advantage of that spot!
When I first arrived, at 6:00 a.m., there was a wedding photographer taking pictures of a bridge and groom. I’m hoping that the wedding was yesterday, or that they were honeymooning here….. anything except pre-wedding pictures for a wedding later that day. I’m picturing a bridge a groom covered with salt and sand……..lol
Maybe it was a trash the dress session and they just hadn’t gotten to that part yet……
I wanted to take a picture of the photographer taking a picture of the wedding couple. It would have been a fine picture, but I didn’t want to intrude on their session since we were the only four people there.
You sound like a very thoughtful person. Plus you probably would have had to get a model release from the photographer and the bride and groom – ha, ha. Being relatively new to professional photography I am still learning all these rules.
Don’t need a model release if they are in a public area, which they were, or can be seen from a public area. Even less so if one is not going to use the picture for commercial purposes. Thoughtfulness would dictate otherwise, though.
Ah! Thanks for the info – I did not realize that!
no cat beaches??…LOL
Not a single one………unless you put a bowl of water next to the litter box………lol
Great photos Ray!
Hello! I nominated you for the One Lovely Blog Award
http://liviamihaelafirinca.wordpress.com/2012/09/10/one-lovely-blog-award-2/ Have a great evening!
Thank you so much!
You are very welcome!
I can smell the fresh air, hear the laughter of children and feel the warmth of sunshine! Thank you for sharing the moment!
Great beach pics. I want summer to keep on for a while longer!
You have to move to San Diego, then. It’s summer here from about January 15 to about December 1…………..lol
I want to go to the beach now.
Let’s go. I’ll be Docent for a Day.
Amazing photos Russel!
This would be ‘doggy heaven’ for my dogs!
Of all the things I love about your blog, your pictures and info on SoCal are favorites. From 2000 to 2005 I lived a few miles up north in OC, and I miss the beauty very much. My mother has a little Min Pin named Pal, who’s barely hanging on at 16 years old, but is still with us. So it’s fun to remember all of us a bit younger when they would visit my wife and me, and we’d take the dog down to Dog Beach every once in awhile. So many great beaches. Pal wasn’t a dog’s dog, so he seemed happier in the quieter environments. So one beach that sticks out as a favorite was Crystal Cove in Laguna for less crowds. Though I recall dogs were only allowed on leashes along the trails. Still I remember Pal really enoyed exploring that area.
Anyway, thanks for bringing back great memories.
So happy that I could bring back some good memories.
Gorgeous beach pictures!
That’s really nice! I wish our beaches were like that, instead of full of uptight people who think all dogs are potential wolves or pooing machines.
Hehe… well, it depends, you know… “Many of San Diego’s beaches don’t look like what you think of when you visualize a beach.” They look EXACTLY like MONTENEGRIN BEACHES, that’s what a real beach is to us – NOT “long, flat expanses of sand and water”!
Love the pictures, the beach – and of course – ZOEY <3 She is already famous with my fb friends as well – whenever i link to your pics, they go like: oh, that's Zoey's dad!
Zoey’s servant is more like it……………lol
I’d know… i feel like my own furbaby’s majordomo most of the times… open/close the doors, groom, feed… lol!
Great beach pics, Russel. I love the first one with the rock overhang. Very dramatic.
Beautiful.
That’s a beautiful beach, and I love the first photo too. And those dogs are so lucky!
Fun pictures! The first two are beautiful
