Panoramas from downtown San Diego
After I finished at The Festival of Sail yesterday, I wandered around downtown San Diego looking for more opportunities to take some pictures to use for Photomerge in Photoshop CS6. I had a lot of fun exploring some buildings that I had never been in and got some pictures to create these photomerges.
The first picture is a photomerge of two pictures taken from the new skybridge downtown. It shows the San Diego Convention Center, the tracks for the San Diego Trolley, downtown Marriott (the two black towers), and the two Hyatt towers (white).
Next up is a panorama of San Diego Bay, a photomerge of five pictures taken from the 15th floor of the Holiday Inn north tower. The ship at the left is the USS Midway Museum, and across the bay you can see the USS Carl Vinson, a nuclear powered aircraft carrier currently docked at the North Island Naval Station.
The following is a tile mural in the lobby of the Holiday Inn downtown. A photomerge of three pictures.
The following is a photomerge of five pictures of Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres. The tower at the left is the combo Omni hotel/condominiums. The upper flower condos have a beautiful view of the ballpark, and most of them are owned by players from the Padres and the Chargers. The big building at the right is the new Central Library, the dome of which will be the second largest dome in the United States and the fourth largest in the world (see more of the library in my post here: America’s second largest dome is nearing completion).
The following photomerge of eight pictures shows mainly the tracks of the San Diego Trolley. The new skybridge for pedestrians is one of my favorite places to watch trains, which I do quite often. Although the Trolley is light rail, the BNSF heavy rail tracks run through here, too. They are the two tracks on the left. Unfortunately, BNSF trains tend to be a couple of miles long so they are not allowed to run through here during the daylight hours, making real train watching here less than ideal since it has to be done at night. Petco Park is at the right, and the greenish towers in the center is the Omni hotel/condo talked about above. The white towers at the left are the Hyatt, and the black tower (actually two towers) in the center are the Harbor Club towers, where Bruce Willis & Demi Moore once owned the 5,000-SF penthouse when they were still married to each other.
Of course, since my whole purpose for being downtown yesterday was to go to the Festival of Sail, I have to end with a photomerge of a tall ship, this one using three pictures:
Remember that you can click on a picture to get a much larger version of it.

Good job on your photomerging. I’m inspired to give it a try!
It’s extremely easy! Take pictures, open them in Photoshop, tell Photoshop to Photomerge them, crop as necessary.
All the photos are good, buuuut the ship is my favorite.
Blessings – Maxi
They came out brilliantly! I love the tall ship – kind of a fan of those.
Very nice! I’ve not been very successful with photo merges in PSE, but I suspect it has more to do with the user than the software.
Love the results of your merging…
Thanks. Since YouTube won’t let me upload any videos, I’ve resorted to photomerging for an extra bit of fun.
Awesome photos! I like the Tall Ship one the best – All Aboard!
My two favourites are of the Bay and the tall ship.
I live in San Diego so please tell me where the sky bridge is.
Downtown. It connects Petco Park on one side of the railroad tracks to the Hilton Hotel and the Convention Center on the other side. Take Park Boulevard all the way south until it terminates at Petco Park, or take Harbor Drive south and as you get to the Convention Center you’ll see the skybridge. It’s awesome. You can’t miss it.
Certainly gives me a bird’s eye view of the city. Thank you!
I love your wide angle shots! Really beautiful
Ah, but see, they are not wide angle shots. I’ve never liked wide any shots because the perspective, especially along the sides, is always so distorted. It might work for birds but not for me. Instead, these are several standard pictures at around 55mm focal length that I told Photoshop CS6 to stitch together using its Photomerge function.
Oh right! I remember you telling me that before! So it’s better huh? i’m still learning lol! I’m trying to decide what lens to get next, but they are so expensive haha
My walkaround lens is a Tamron 28-300mm. As with any zoom lens like that, especially for the third party manufacturers like Tamron and Sigma, it has its problems, but nothing that can’t be easily corrected in Lightroom, PaintShop Pro, or Photoshop. And considering the price, it’s a real bargain!
Thank you so much! That has really helped me
Russel, Fabulous blog! Your experiences and post actually helpful. About many place I got the solutions and ways. Even Tips. Appreciated!
Great pan of Petco Park. Not a Padres fan, but I’d really like to see that park.
They won’t let you into the park if you’re not a Padres fan. You have to answer under penalty of perjury, “Are you a Padres fan?” If you answer no, you don’t get in. That’s why attendance is so abysmal. They won’t let any of the opposing team’s fans in, and the Padres only have about a thousand fans………….lol
Russel, Thank you for visiting so many of my posts. Yours are very nice, too.
