Who drank the Bud Light?
When I was in high school in Kingsville, Texas, the group I hung out with sometimes went to the city cemetery…. At night! I occasionally went with them. I quit going to cemeteries sometime in the mid-1970s, until recently.
San Diego doesn’t appear to have a lot of cemeteries, certainly not like my home state of Texas and other states throughout the Bible Belt South. However, there are three huge cemeteries right next to each other that I drive by a few times each week since they are near freeways and stores that I visit regularly. I finally stopped by earlier this year and found them interesting. I walked around looking for the oldest date on a headstone but actually found the headstones themselves to be even more fascinating. Following is a selection.
Picture 1 — That really was his name?
Picture 2 — Words of advice for Alice or from Alice?
Picture 3 — Who drank the Bud Light?
Picture 4 — Wonder if he wrote a book.
Picture 5 — A beautiful poem for those who believe in God
Picture 6 — I’m not quite ready to follow.
Picture 7 — I wanna see the rose!
Picture 8 — Another beautiful poem
Picture 10 — All bases covered
Picture 11 — The cowboy evangelist will ride again

You came across an interesting assortment of headstones. The style seems very different from the ones I see here in the northeast, more elaborate and wordy. Maybe they charge more per word here. I like the ones with the poems too.
Too bad there is not an “OUTSTANDING” button on this post. I really enjoyed your selections. People are interesting. What they leave behind either makes us think or is just plain puzzling. Thanks again for sharing.
What an interesting collection of headstones. I especially like the Bhagavad Gita quotation. When you next camp out in my blog, look out for August 26th when we visited a fascinating graveyard near the sea in Cornwall, UK.
I was surprised when I found Bhagavad Gita in Wikipedia. Made for an interesting read while I was compiling my post. If I had not gotten distracted reading Gita, the post would have been up an hour earlier!……..lol
I shall look him up too. Thank you again

Those are amazing headstones. So glad you shared.
What interesting head stones… must make a turn at the one I pass… hate going in though, always feel I might not get back out again…
I met a coyote when I was there. I did think that maybe I might not get back out………lol

My son’s grave stone is black obsidian, shipped from Africa, with the words “Safe at Home”. engraved between a baseball glove and cross. He collapsed and could not be revived while playing baseball in October, 2006. Epithets are sometimes very touching. My dad’s favorite was one he saw as a child, it said. “Some women have many children, some have none, here lies the mother of 31! beebeesworld
#5 was moving for me… even though I don’t believe in….!!!

Haha, whoa! #6 is intense…
Cemeteries can be interesting and tell you so much about the town…I haven’t been to one in ages… never in this city that I’ve lived for 22 years…maybe it’s time to visit one.
I enjoyed reading these! OMgosh! I know this sounds odd but, just by reading the headstones kinda makes me wish I knew a few of these people and of course it’s too bad life has to end on earth for us all. By the way, My favorite one is The Beautiful Mommy one. This was indeed touching. Thank you for sharing!!!
Some of the more unique stones I’ve seen, and I’ve seen quite a few as cemeteries interest me and are a favorite place to take photos. Thanks for sharing these. I’ll be posting some soon of a family of elk amongst the gravestones early in the morning at our local cemetery.
Thanks for visiting my blog again and for your faithful appreciation.
Hmmmm. I don’t think I visited your blog today. Zoey! Zoey, get in here! Have you been visiting blogs again……………?
I think it was yesterday….I’m a bit slow….
Although it might have been that Zoey-kitty sneaking around liking things…. I’m very behind overall on keeping up with my blogfriends, and I’ll probably comment on stuff from several days ago in several days from now. Whatever day it is and whatever the order, it’s always a pleasure to ‘see’ you.
It was Zoey the Cool Cat. I got her to ‘fess up. Seems she was playing around on the computer all day yesterday…….lol
Apparently she enjoys mountain photos.
That sly Cool Cat hiking vicariously while no one was looking.
There’s no telling what she does when I’m not here. Eventually I’ve going to have Santa Claus bring me a home security system and I’m going to set it to video everything while I’m gone. That should provide me with some great entertainment!
Oooo…webcam! webcam!….I vote for Zoey the Cool Cat webcam! lol
interesting post , Russell.
One tombstone that I remember is that of a known hypochondriac, who put on his gravestone,” I TOLD you I was sick!”
Interesting stuff right there. I remember going Ripley’s Believe it or Not in NYC and they had this exhibit of tombstones. There was one I remembered was “Here lies the body of Jonathan Blake stepped on gas instead of the brake”.
Lately here in San Diego that’s not as funny as it should be. We’ve had a lot of that happening. One guy stepped on the gas on the third floor of a parking garage and wound up going through the concrete barrier and landing upside down on the street below. Amazingly no one was injured.
Oh I know! Its actually because I did it while learning how to drive. Thats why it stuck to me. And it happened at my front door..so wasn`t really crazy.
But that incident in San Diego is really scary. I`m happy to hear no one was injured!
We love cemeteries. We are going to be in SD later this year. Can you tell me where these are?
Hey, LuAnn. I included a map at the very end of the post, and you can click on the link to go directly to Google Maps.
Thanks! Sorry I missed that. I will check it out.
Truly interesting photos. Some inspiring, some odd. And I don’t know what to make of #9? LOL. Great post.
It is strange.
oddly interesting and some even funny.
So sad but so beautiful. I don’t know what it is about graveyards, they are so beautiful to me, in a haunting way. Thank you for sharing
