How I Did It

One of the things that I like to do, and do quite often, is to fills letters with pictures or other graphics. You can often see what I do by looking at the Zoey the Cool Cat stamp of approval at the end of each post.

In analyzing new software for ease of use, creating fanciful text is one of my test functions.

Recently on a visit to SeaWorld San Diego, I got a nice picture of flamingo feathers floating in the water:

I went to CorelDRAW! X6 first since I’m most familiar with this task in that program. With just a few clicks and about a minute, I came up with this:

Photoshop CS6 took me about 19 steps — the fewest I could figure out — and with practice and Actions, I got it down to about five minutes. I found working with text in Photoshop CS6 to be somewhat difficult. Here’s my best result in Photoshop:

I thought it was interesting that I did not have access to the same fonts in the two programs. I always thought that any specific program fonts came from fonts installed on the computer. Obviously that’s not so.

I'm Zoey the Cool Cat, and I approve this post

  1. Love the feathers photograph. Need to get myself photo editing software – look how fun that is!

  2. Thank you for camping out on my blog, I am glad you enjoyed your stay! Loving your phot tips too! :-)

  3. I’m a square. I loved the first picture of the feathers.
Thank you for coming back to camp on my blog. Great to know you’ve been visiting,See you again!

  4. That is really cool! I also love your stamp of Zoey.

  5. RR….19 steps and five minutes on my computer would lead to complete sanity melt-down. Have lived in my flat for two years now….just figured out how to change the settings on the BOSCH dryer. That’s a telling story…..and…for some reason you are showing up in my SPAM folder. I [especially] like the fact you are not a salesperson of men-folk enhancing party favours…which means…you are not trashed.

    Love the snaps!!!!!!!!!!!!
    RR, too.

  6. What a great photo of the feathers, and so creative with the text lesson! thanks!

  7. Hmmm – I can do that in Elements with two layers and grouping – and I’ve never noticed a difference in fonts from one program to the next. Things change, however, which is probably why there’s such a variety of photo-editing software.

  8. I can totally see how you earnt Zoey’s stamp of approval. Great work! :-)

  9. I love how the two pink feathers pop out of the photo.

  10. You really are now an expert!

  11. Interesting point of view
    I like it

  12. Love the picture of the feathers. Both of your creations are nice but I really like the first one. Hugs

  13. I took a photoshop class last winter @ 289.00, oh man I need to practice because I forget already. Use it or lose it. I like the first feathers and Zoey is adorable any way you spell it. :)

  14. Cool Photoshop work. – I’m a feather fanatic. I wouldn’t have been taking pictures. I’d have been risking life and limb if necessary to collect the feathers. (I’ve crossed barriers and fences in the past for these “gifts”. Kind of surprised I’ve never been thrown out of any animal park/zoo etc.

  15. I like your feather photo. In my opinion, the CorelDraw font seems to capture the whispiness of the feathers better than the PhotoShop font.

    Cheers!

  16. That’s cool! You’re so creative :)
