La Jolla: Rugged, accessible, beautiful
In my 19-years-in-San-Diego opinion, the most beautiful part of the San Diego County coastline is at La Jolla. It’s a rugged beauty with beaches totally unlike what you see along the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Seaboard. Part of what makes it so special is that it is a ruggedness that is accessible for viewing, ocean swimming, beachside play, or just taking a few pictures. The best place is La Jolla Cove in downtown La Jolla.
If you want beaches in the style of the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Seaboard, head over to Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and Coronado Beach, which was voted the #1 beach in the United States for 2012.

Love Zoey’s stamp today! Your photos look like postcards!
stunning
The rock shelving above the sands at La Jolla is what makes this place so magical for me.
So that’s what makes La Jolla so special. I am so enlightened by this post. Time I visited sunny California again!
Wish I was there-such awesome scenery! beebee
That really does look beautiful
What a beautiful colours of the ocean… Fascinated me. Thank you dear Russel, love, nia
La Jolla will always have a special place in my heart… its my first hometown in the US
I came here in 2006 as a tourist and I said to myself: are you serious? people live in this area? this is paradise! 2 years later the dream became a reality and I can’t believe that I take it for granted sometimes!!
That’s like me. I arrived in May 1992 to drive the Pacific Coast Highway from San Diego to Monterey. I got to La Jolla and Torrey Pines and told myself that eventually I would retire here. Eleven months later I was living here, retired for 11 months before going back to work.
I just loved the contrast of the sand beaches and the rock outcroppings next to each other. Amazing yet lovely ruggedness (as you stated). Hows the fishing there? The contrast reminds me of a contrast I ran across on the Red Cape (Caba Rojo) of Puerto Rico. Not the town by that name but the actual cape. There were rock cliffs next to sandy beaches and cacti growing all over the place. It was enhanced by an abandoned lighthouse and at the bottom of the cliffs a salt water dehydration pond where they made their own salt. My sons and I collected conch shells (we were the only ones there) and found a scorpion living in one of them. Thank you for sharing such great photos. The jump rope is still on my desk. I have not yet found a proper place for it.
Fishing at the Cove isn’t very good because it’s just too rocky and rough. Best wader fishing is over at Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach. Of course, there’s lots of deep sea fishing everywhere.
Beautiful pictures…time for a drive.
Beautiful captures… look like holiday shots…
Beautiful photo’s … the blue water is breathtaking.
How lucky you are to live near such a beautiful place. I’m quite jealous. Thank you for sharing these wonderful shots.
Spectacular!
I live in south Florida, I don’t see beaches like that. Wow.
AAHH Be careful of that beach! I saw a news feed saying there are hundreds of sharks at that beach right now! Just don’t go in the water lol
You probably saw something about the beach over by La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Those sharks are leopard sharks and are basically harmless. It’s actually fun to go over there and walk amongst them. Reports are as high as 800 leopard sharks there.
Over at La Jolla Cove, there is a deepwater canyon offshore, perfect for the occasional great white shark to stop by for a visit. I think the last one sighted was back in early July.
Oh ok that’s good to know, I’m so scared of sharks that I started just freaking out HAHA! But I’m glad they are the harmless ones
Thank you for letting me know! And still be careful! lol
