Panoramas of the Del Mar race track
I have really been having fun with the pictures I took yesterday at the Del Mar race track. The Photomerge feature in Photoshop CS6 is pretty cool, giving me these hand-held panoramas:
The Grandstand:
The grandstand is not curved, but because I was standing at the center of the grandstand to take the five pictures used to create this, Photoshop gave me kind of a fisheye view.
The Paddock:
The Race Track and infield:
The Pacific Ocean (and part of the parking lot):
This last one is a mural depicting 113 historic personalities affiliated with the race track during its 75 years:
Some of the personalities depicted in the mural include Bing Crosby (founder), W.C. Fields, Pat O’Brien (of New Orleans fame), Betty Grable, Jimmy Durante, Oliver Hardy, Red Skelton, Dorothy Lamour, Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, J. Edgar Hoover, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Taylor, Ava Gardner, Mickey Rooney, Bob Hope, Tim Conway, and Jenny Craig.

Nice photos Russel, but I have been working in the racing industry for over a decade , and as you know I’m an animal lover and I’, opposed to horse racing now!
The horses don’t like it at all and get very afraid and anxious.
I went to a horse race in Louisiana back in 1974. That was enough for me. Yesterday was the first time I’ve ever been back to any animal race, and I still don’t approve of them. However, the photographic opportunity was too much to pass up, and since it is an integral part of the San Diego scene, I now have photographs.
Thanks Russel, a fine reply!:))))
It will most likely be the last animal race I ever attend in my lifetime. Just don’t see their purpose, and I feel so sorry for the animals. We humans can really be cruel, all for our amusement and entertainment, which usually also involves the almighty dollar.
He venido a visitarte porque diste a seguir en mi blog, pero no puedo leerte, soy de los taitantísimos españoles que ni papa de inglés.Yrum, un beso
My grandfather raced and bred horses long, long ago (like 1900-1935) and he took horses every year to Del Mar. I imagine most of the buildings were different from what I can see here but I’ve never seen the track at all, just heard stories about his racing days from my grandmother (never knew him) so this was fun. Thanks.
Do you know the names of any of the horses? I’d love to track down their history at Del Mar.
They renovated everything about five years ago. Virtually none of the buildings are recognizable to pictures of old anymore, especially that far back.
I only know the names of his most well-known/successful horses: Chilhowee Pongee,Oswego, Chalmers, Glyn, Regalo, Mary Jane, Worth, Duval, and Desert Light.
I know Chilhowee beat Black Gold at Latonia and was second to him at the Derby and Mary Jane won the Oaks but I really have no info as to what horses he traveled with when. He dragged my grandmother around from Saratoga to Hialeah to Del Mar to Chicago, etc. for 12 years before they had children when he was 50 but she only talked about the hotels and shops (loved the del Coronado) and sights — my mother’s the only one left and she was too little to remember. Most of what I know is from an article in Encyclopedia of American Biography. Anyway, if you discover that any of those horses raced Del Mar I’d love to know!
Oops, I just did enough research to figure out that whatever the track was that took them to that area every year, it wasn’t Del Mar, which opened after my grandfather died.
Del Mar is celebrating 75 years this year.
Amazing shots!^^
Applause for the good job, Russel.

Seeing & feeling your experiences via your lens is a treat! Thank you for sharing.
I like the 2nd one the most
Probably my favorite, too. I used only three pictures to create it whereas the others used six to nine pictures. The more pictures, the smaller the panorama for my blog, the width of which isn’t really conducive to panorama pictures. I haven’t figured out how to do that “click for a larger version” thing yet.
This is an interesting website, and this post was really awesome.
I’m so jealous, I want the lens that does that lol! Great pictures
Photoshop is much cheaper than the lens that does that!……lol
Ooooo really?? Awesome! i’ll have to figure it out someday lol
