Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Race #3, August 1, 2012
My day at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club ranks as one of the Top 10 coolest things I’ve ever done.
Our group, the Pacific Photography Society, arrived at the racetrack at 7:00 a.m. Our “all access pass” provided us with access to the center of the paddock, the barns, the walking and workout areas, the race track, the winner’s circle (which was really a winner’s rectangle), the rootop (awesome views of San Diego “where the turf meets the surf” from the sixth floor rooftop, about 80 feet high), trackside views of the races, and views of the races from the pressbox.
The security guard at the barns rejected our all access pass, but within 10 minutes he had been relieved of duty and we continued on our way.
It was hard to decide what I liked the best, but I think it came down to watching the races from the pressbox.
Here’s the ending (27 seconds) of the third race, Star Nicholas winning the Gold, Warren’s Concept getting the Silver, and Siempre Mio getting the Bronze. Oh, wait…. That would be the Olympics. Here it would be Win, Place, & Show.
