I don’t want to be a Twit. Please give me some vowels.

Whn Twttr bcm so pplr svrl yrs ago, I prdctd tht it wld ruin the Nglsh lng as we no it. Mi prdctn haz cum tru.

I haven’t read a football magazine since sometime in the mid-1980s. However, since Texas A&M University, my alma mater, has said goodbye to the Big 12 and hello to the Southeast Conference, I bought Phil Steele’s 2012 College Football Preview. It has 344 pages and is stuffed with information. Unfortunately, most of it is unreadable for me.

Here is some of what was written about A&M:

“In HC Mike Sherman’s first season …. McGee was a #4DC …. Ryan Tannehill was the team’s #1 rec …. despite dealing with a leaky O-line …. set several schl records …. the preseason Big 12 OPOY …. Due to TO’s …. I pointed out LY ….”

It is so bad that Mr. Steele includes on the third page a helpful guide to abbreviations:

Abbreviations

The funny thing is, if he didn’t spend half the magazine touting how great his magazine is, he’d have room for real English instead of Twitter English. This is just a sign of what’s to come, and I’m not looking forward to it. I really don’t want to be a Twit. Please give me some vowels.

The Cat Lover's Book of Days

If cats seem distant and aloof….

Snippets

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I’m a very structured person. I even schedule my play time, down time, spontaneity….

One of the things I do each day is to read a page from The Cat Lover’s Book of Days: A year of cat history, lore, and laughter, by Peg Silloway, owner of The Silloway Press.

The Cat Lover's Book of Days

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

The Cat Lover's Book of DaysThe thing I like most about this book is that the pages are by date but the dates have no days. Every other book that I have ever bought like this is only good for one time every seven years because the pages are “Wednesday, August 29,” Sometimes they are only good for one year because the pages include the year: “Wednesday, August 29, 2012.” This book is simply “August 29″ so it’s good every year. It even has a “February 29” for leap years. I never skip it, preferring to simply read two pages on February 28 if there won’t be a February 29.

The Cat Lover's Book of DaysPeg (yes, I do know her, but she doesn’t give me a commission for posts like this one) has collected pictures, sayings, facts, etc., about cats, all kinds of cats, and put it all here in one special book.

Here are some examples:

“If cats seem distant and aloof, it is because this is not their native planet — they are here just to visit and dominate.” — Hank Roll

Commander Data had a cat on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Originally played by a Somali, it was replaced in later episodes by an orange tabby.

“No amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat, and no amount of masking tape can ever totally remove his fur from your couch.” — Leo Dworken

“Never belittle the comfort offered by a cat — she has no words, but by small touchings and buttings and leanings, she shows her love for you — and tries to distract you from your sorrow.” — Pam Brown

The Cat Lover's Book of Days

“Cats like doors left open — in case they change their minds.” — Rosemary Nisbet

Do you know who invented the cat flap? Sir Isaac Newton. He was working on some light experiments that required a dark room. His cat kept nudging the door open, which let in light and spoiled his experiments.  Newton cut a hole in the door and installed a flap of felt so that his cat could come and go at will while he continued to work effectively.

A cat isn’t fussy — just so long as you remember he likes his milk in the shallow, rose-patterned saucer and his fish on the blue plate, from which he will take it, and eat it off the floor.” — Arthur Bridges

Rule 1 for Cats: “When in doubt, wash!”

The Cat Lover's Book of Days

“Cats keep their cool, no matter what. Even when they do things like fall or lose their balance, they’ll walk away with an attitude that seems to say, ‘I meant to do that.’ ” — Michael Jordan

“In a cat’s eye, all things belong to cats.” — English proverb

The Cat Lover's Book of Days

“There is no such thing as ‘just a cat.’ ” — Robert A. Heinlein

“You’re nobody until you’ve been ignored by a cat.” — Unknown

“I had been told that the training procedure with cats was difficult. It’s not. Mine had me trained in two days.” — Bill Dana

And this rhyming riddle:

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives;
Every wife had seven sacks;
Every sack had seven cats;
Every cat had seven kits.
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were going to St. Ives?

Who drank the Bud Light?

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

When I was in high school in Kingsville, Texas, the group I hung out with sometimes went to the city cemetery…. At night! I occasionally went with them. I quit going to cemeteries sometime in the mid-1970s, until recently.

San Diego doesn’t appear to have a lot of cemeteries, certainly not like my home state of Texas and other states throughout the Bible Belt South. However, there are three huge cemeteries right next to each other that I drive by a few times each week since they are near freeways and stores that I visit regularly. I finally stopped by earlier this year and found them interesting. I walked around looking for the oldest date on a headstone but actually found the headstones themselves to be even more fascinating. Following is a selection.

Bird picture framed in Photoshop CS6

Frame those birds, baby, frame those birds

How I Did It

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I like to frame my pictures but the framing function (border) at WordPress is lacking, at best.

I used to use Corel PaintShop Pro X4 and CorelDRAW! X6 to do frames. In fact, Zoey the Cool Cat’s stamp of approval in each post is done in CorelDRAW! X6.

My focus over the past few months has been on Adobe Photoshop CS6, so I was extremely happy recently to find the various framing functions. Many of the frames can be done with Actions, or you can do your own frame and set up your own Action. Actions are macros, or scripts, that allow you to do the same thing over and over again, very quickly.

Following are some recent pictures of birds at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park which were framed in Photoshop CS6.
